Metro State’s Got Game: Homecoming moves to fall semester
Sep 17, 2008

The bed race is a perennial favorite and will be held again this year on Friday, Sept. 26. Teams must sign up by noon on Monday, Sept. 22, in the Student Activities Office, TIV 305.
Homecoming used to be held during the spring semester but starting this year, it’s moving to a more traditional fall event. This year’s Homecoming, to be held Sept. 22-28, is being touted as the biggest in school history, with more than 18 events planned all week long.

“We’ve got a lot of new things this year, and a lot of participation from various departments around campus,” says Elaine Becks, Homecoming committee vice chair. Becks is the business manager/ scholarship/event coordinator for Intercollegiate Athletics.

In addition to changing the season, this is the first year that Homecoming will feature three different sporting events: women’s volleyball (Sept. 26) and men’s and women’s soccer (Sept 28). The Pep Rally celebrating the three games will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Tivoli Commons area.

The 6th annual penny drive to see which department or organization can collect the most pennies for the charity of their choice is in full swing and will run through Sept. 26. Faculty and staff will also compete for bragging rights and a pizza party for the entire staff in the office decorating contest from Sept. 17-25.

Among the other Homecoming events are the third annual SAE Dodgeball Tournament on Sept. 22; a book talk and signing by Criminal Justice and Criminology Assistant Professor Allison Cotton, author of Effigy: Images of Capital Defendant, also on Sept. 22; the 2008 Alumni Recognition Evening on Sept. 24; and an appreciation barbeque for alumni employees and their families on Sept. 28 at noon in conjunction with the soccer games.

The weeklong event is jam packed with activities for all Metro State alumni, students and faculty to participate in. For a complete listing of all the planned events, please visit the Metro State Homecoming ‘08 Web site at http://www.mscd.edu/homecoming/.
