Metro State faculty and alumni continue to distinguish themselves and the College in various ways.
The recently released book “NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children” features a chapter on Tools of the Mind (TOM), the early elementary education program developed at Metro State in 1993 by Deborah Leong, now emeritus professor of psychology, and Elena Bodrova, at the time a visiting professor. The TOM approach incorporates cognitive and social-emotional regulation in preschoolers as key factors of academic readiness.
“Nurture Shock,” by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, is about how conventional parenting beliefs and practices can backfire. It is soon to be featured on Good Morning America, Nightline, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, and in Newsweek. Tools of the Mind is featured in the book’s eighth chapter, “Can Self-Control Be Taught?,” which is described in the table of contents thus: Developers of a new kind of preschool keep losing their grant money—the students are so successful they’re no longer “at risk enough” to warrant further study. What’s their secret?
