Speech communication major Antoinette Martin helped saved a life
Dec. 7 while working at her 9NEWS internship, according to Jack Maher,
executive producer of the station’s morning news show.
The 21-year-old was covering a Pearl Harbor ceremony at the Denver
VFW Post with photographer Andy Buck (a Metro State alumnus), when one
of the attendees passed out in her chair. Military personnel carried
the elderly woman in her chair to another room. Martin said she “ran
back, took her pulse and started asking questions” of the woman, who by
this time had regained consciousness. She called 911 and gave them
woman some orange juice to get her glucose levels up. “I was prepared
to do CPR, but it wasn’t necessary,” Martin adds.
“The woman is going to be ok, thanks to Antoinette’s quick action,” says Maher.
“I didn’t think anything of it. It wasn’t something I wanted to be recognized for,” Martin says.
In addition to her classes and internship, Martin holds two
part-time jobs, works with Volunteers of America and is a member of
Black Student Alliance. After she graduates in December 2010, she plans
on enlisting in the U.S. Navy.
Martin is the second Metro State student to have been involved
recently in helping save a life. Human performance and sport major
Alaina Larson was among several lifeguards honored this summer for
their role in rescuing a swimmer at the Aztlan Recreation Center. (Student lifeguard recognized for saving 5-year-old).
