Welcome Back and Happy New Year:
As 2009 begins, we continue to
educate the community on and off the campus, and our faculty and staff
are continually sought for expert interviews. The following programs,
events or achievements have been highlighted in the news media:
master’s program proposals, NCAA Women’s Soccer Final Four, Veterans
Day, Frosty’s Feast, and a history-making graduation.These stories
showcase Metro State’s many successes and help further the College as
the preeminent public urban baccalaureate college in the nation.

The
Metro State Board of Trustees’ approval to move forward on a proposal
for a master’s program at the College was announced in The Denver Post
and on 9NEWS on Dec. 4.President Stephen Jordan was quoted prominently

Prior
to the BOT’s approval to move forward, the idea received other media
coverage. On Oct. 23 and Nov. 21, Silver and Gold Record ran pieces. On

President
Jordan was cited in a Denver Post piece on Jan. 2 about college
presidents asking the legislature to loosen regulations that public
colleges and universities have to abide by in doing business every day.

Jordan’s re-election as chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents
Council was announced in The Denver Post “People on the Move” on Nov. 7

In
December, Trustee Antonio Esquibel and Associate Vice President of
Enrollment Management Judi Diaz Bonacquisti were interviewed about the
College’s Hispanic Serving Institution initiative by the public
television show, Latin View. The Denver-based program, which airs on 30
public TV stations across the country, including Denver’s KBDI-12, has
run multiple times in January.
On Nov. 24, President Jordan was
also cited in a Denver Post piece about voters saying ‘yes’ to raising
gambling limits in three Colorado towns, with funding going to

The
historical graduation of Winifred Jennings, 85, from Metro State
received nationwide coverage. Jennings, the oldest Metro State
graduate, received her degree in behavioral science at fall
commencement. Original stories ran in The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain
News, the New York Daily News and on 9NEWS. The 9NEWS piece was picked
up by more than 40 stations across the country, including Dateline NBC

media also covered another historical aspect of the graduation. 9NEWS
published the announcement that Terrance Carroll (D-Denver), the first
African American speaker-elect of the House of Representatives, would

Denver
Mayor John Hickenlooper attended the popular Frosty’s Feast luncheon on
Dec. 3 to officially proclaim the day “Frosty’s Feast Day.” CW2 and FOX
31 TV reported on the event. It was fitting that the faculty organizer
of the luncheon had recently been honored by a prestigious
organization. Associate Professor of Events Management Cynthia
Vannucci, was recognized as “Educator of the Year” by the Professional
Convention Management Association. The honor was announced by the Rocky

The
College’s stellar athletic programs have also been recognized. The
advancement of the women’s soccer team to the NCAA Division II Final
Four was covered in the media. On Dec. 4, the Rocky Mountain News ran a
profile on Head Coach Adrianne Almaraz. On Nov. 23, The Denver Post
wrote a piece. It was a continuation of good news about the soccer
team. TheRocky Mountain News, on Nov. 12, announced that defender
Nicole Cito was named the Central Region women’s soccer player of the
year. On Oct. 31, the Rocky Mountain Newsannounced that former Metro
State forward Kylee Hanavan and four additional former Roadrunners were
named to the RMAC all-time women’s soccer team as part of the league’s

addition, on Nov. 11 and 17, the announcement of Jerry Schemmel as the
head baseball coach received media coverage in The Denver Post, the

Nov. 8, 10 and 11, a flag-raising ceremony to honor veteran’s on campus

October 2008 issue of the Denver Urban Spectrum ran an announcement
about Metro States new Foundation board, featuring a photo of Jerome
Davis with Xcel Energy.
Metro State faculty members have also shared their expertise on a broad range of subjects.
Not
skipping a beat, Political Science Professor Norman Provizer continues
to serve as a political analyst on various topics from the historical
presidential election to the Colorado’s U.S. Senate appointment. He has
been interviewed frequently since late October by CW2, FOX31, 7NEWS,
KWGN-TV, 9NEWS, The Colorado Independent, the Grand Junction

India Times announced that three students from Metro State’s Department
