Metro State in the Media -- 6/30/08

It’s 4th of July week and a true countdown to the Democratic National Convention. During these exciting times, Metro State continues to be a leader in educating the community on and off the campus, as evidenced by the array of media coverage this past month. Our expert faculty and staff have weighed in on stories ranging from politics, to the airline industry, to the death penalty. These news media stories highlight Metro State’s many successes and help to further the College as the preeminent public urban baccalaureate college in the nation.

Metro State President Stephen Jordan chimed in on important higher education news even as the academic year came to a close. President Jordan’s appearance at the Molson Coors Brewing Company retirement party for John Ortiz, a longtime volunteer in the Latino community, was covered in the June 5 issue of La Voz. The latest exhibit at the Metro State Center for Visual Art was also featured in the news. Assistant Director/Curator Cecily Cullen was interviewed by 9NEWS/MY 20 about the “Changing Identity” exhibit. The piece which ran on June 11 and 12, features a video and an online slide show of art from the exhibit. In addition, Westword.com ran a piece, including a quote from Cullen in its June 5 issue. On June 24, Professor of Computer Science Steve Beaty was featured in a story on FOX 31 regarding online scams.
Adjunct Professor of Psychology Laura Manuel penned a guest column in the Greeley Tribune. The June 19th piece addressed the role of CSAP testing in the education system. To read the article, go to CSAP tests are dehumanizing education.
Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology Allison Cotton was interviewed by Univision Colorado about the death penalty on Tuesday, June 17.
Economics Professor Mohammed Akacem penned two guest columns in June. The Rocky Mountain News column on June 14 was written in response to the June 9 bombing of a train station in Algeria that killed 13 people. The Denver Post column on June 18 addresses oil prices. To read the columns, go to

On June 27, Metro State Professor Norman Provizer was interviewed by CW2 about early poll results of Colorado voters on the U.S presidential candidates.
Norman was also quoted in a piece that ran on June 16 in the Rocky Mountain News about campaign advertising. Provizer was also interviewed on May 30 by CW2 about funding issues the Democratic National Convention is facing. On June 5, Aviation and Aerospace Science Associate Professor James Simmons was interviewed by Univision Colorado about the many changes happening in the airline industry.
On June 4, Political Science Assistant Professor Sheila Rucki was interviewed on FOX 31’s “Good Day Colorado” about Sen. Barack Obama’s nomination and the chances of him choosing Sen. Hillary Clinton as a running mate.

On June 11, CNN.Com announced the appointment of Courtney Cowgill as chief financial and accounting officer, secretary and treasurer of VCG Holding.
