Metro State continues to educate the community on and off the campus, as evidenced by the array of media coverage this past month. Our expert faculty and staff have weighed in on the city’s graffiti issues, the War on Terror and Sen. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco Field. These news media stories highlight Metro State’s many successes and help to further the College as the preeminent public urban baccalaureate college in the nation.

The July 25 Denver Business Journal highlighted the Hotel Learning Center, which once complete will serve as a fully functioning hotel and learning lab for Metro State’s Hospitality, Tourism and Events (HTE) students.  Entitled, “Metro State planning a ‘teaching’ hotel,” the article included quotes from Assistant Professor of HTE Chad Gruhl and Walter Isenberg, president and CEO of Denver-based Sage Hospitality Resources who is serving on the project’s steering committee.  To read the article, go to http://denver.bizjournals.com/denver/stories/2008/07/28/story10.html

President Stephen Jordan was quoted in a July 25 Denver Post article about how the possible approval of Amendment 46 could affect how public higher-education institutions admit students and give them money. President Jordan has also been interviewed by Comcast “Newsmakers” about the upcoming Christo and Jeanne-Claude exhibit and the capital campaign for the purchase of the Center for Visual Art. The interview is running at various times during the month of July. President Jordan was also interviewed in a 9NEWS piece that ran on July 8 and 9 about the Auraria Campus closing during the Democratic National Convention. On July 25, the Rocky Mountain News art and architecture columnist wrote a piece about the current exhibit at the Center for Visual Art’s called “Changing Identity” and the upcoming Christo and Jeanne-Claude exhibit. In addition, the article mentioned the $2 million campaign to purchase the space by 2010, its 20th anniversary. Metro State’s Skyline Park Series: Countdown to the 2008 DNC has received a range of coverage. A 30-minute public affairs radio show focusing on Metro State’s involvement with the DNC, featuring Political Science Chair and Professor Robert Hazan, aired Sunday, July 27, on the following stations: KYGO 98.5 FM, KS107.5 FM, 104.3 FM and ESPN1600 AM. In addition to talking about the importance of the series, Hazan touched on “Metro State Gets Unconventional” and “When History Happens.”

The series also received coverage on 9NEWS July 9 and 10 for their kick-off event, to Colorado Higher ED News on July 8 and 22, to calendar placements in The Denver Post and The Associated Press day calendars. To read articles and view a news clip on the series, visit

Metro State faculty members continue to provide the media with interesting stories about their accomplishments and are often sought for their expert commentary.

Criminology and Criminal Justice Assistant Professor Noah Fritz was featured on the cover of “Denver & the West” in the Sunday Denver Post on July 20 and on a 7NEWS segment on Sunday, July 27.

Both pieces explored graffiti mapping, a research project Fritz and his students are currently working on to determine if graffiti is connected to crime areas throughout the city. Political Science Professor Norman Provizer was interviewed July 23 on FOX31 “Good Day Colorado” about Sen. Barack Obama’s trip to the Middle East. He also defines the meaning of the term “favorite son” in Rocky Mountain News article on July 8. Provizer was also interviewed on CW2 about the possibility of Obama moving his DNC acceptance speech from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field at Mile High. On July 3, he was quoted by the Rocky Mountain News on the controversy surrounding the singing of the national anthem by local jazz artist Rene Marie. To read the articles, go to

Chair and Political Science Professor Robert Hazan was interviewed on 9NEWS on July 13 and 14 regarding nine American soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan in mid-July.

Interim Deputy Provost and Professor of Chicana/o Studies Luis Torres was quoted in a July 1 article in the Denver Daily News that addressed Gov. Bill Ritter’s comments about the chances of Sen.
