Dear Metro State Community,

Welcome back, again!  Metro State continues to educate the community on and off the campus, as evidenced by the array of media coverage this past month. Our expert faculty and staff provided in-depth commentary on various topics, including key college initiatives, the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. These news media stories highlight Metro State’s many successes and help to further the College as the preeminent public urban baccalaureate college in the nation.

The Board of Trustees Sept. 3 vote on legislative issues expected to be on Colorado’s November ballot was announced in the Denver Business Journal, on Sept. 4 and the Rocky Mountain News, on Sept. 5. The issues not only affect higher education but the state of Colorado. To read the articles, go to

President Stephen Jordan has chimed in on collegiate issues of local and national significance. On Aug. 28 President Jordan was quoted in a feature piece about the implementation of the College’s Pay-for-Performance initiative this winter. The piece, which ran on the cover of the “Denver and the West” section featured a photo of Professor of Computer Science Steve Beaty and quotes from Interim Provost and Vice President Linda Curran and Assistant Professor of English Tat Sang So.  President Jordan was highlighted as an opinion leader for an Aug. 23 Rocky Mountain News piece the DNC’s impact on Denver and Colorado. On Aug. 19, President Jordan was cited in a 9NEWS piece featuring the stance of Colorado’s college presidents on lowering the drinking age. To read the articles, go to

The Aug. 11 Denver Post mentioned President Jordan and Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies Derrick Hudson were recognized by the prominent journalists’ organization – Colorado Association of Black Journalists. Jordan earned second place in the public relations category for our ongoing campaign, “The Great Equalizer.” The purpose of the campaign is to increase awareness among the general public, legislators and the academia about Metro State’s unique mission, vision and role as a leader in educating students of color and urban students.  Professor Hudson earned first place in the interactive/online category for his April 11 column than ran in The Denver Post, titled “Likening Obama and Wright to the blues and gospel music.”

On Aug. 28, the Chronicle of Higher Education featured a piece on When History Happens, a project of Metro State’s Teaching with Primary Sources-Colorado program.  (Note, membership is required to access Chronicle of Higher Education article.)  On Aug. 19, Professor of Technical Communications and Media Peggy O’Neill Jones was quoted in the Rocky Mountain News about WHH, a project which O’Neill Jones directs. On Sept. 4 Westword ran a feature piece on Metro State Center for Visual Art’s current exhibition, Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects. 7NEWS interviewed CVA Curator and Director Jennifer Garner on-air about the exhibit, the artists’ public lecture and the Art Department on their 11 a.m. show on Aug. 18. On Aug. 19, the Rocky Mountain News “Business Briefs” listed the names of the 20 entrepreneurs serving on the Center for Innovation’s newly developed external board of advisors. Political Science Professor Richard Moeller was interviewed on Sept. 4 by KOA Radio’s “The Ride Home” segment about Gov. Sarah Palin, Republican vice presidential candidate.

On Sept. 3, Assistant Political Science Professor Susana Vela-Pryor was interviewed by Univision Colorado about the Republican National Convention.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Roosevelt Price, II was interviewed by FOX 31 on Sept. 2 about the consequences of parents doing their child’s homework. Assistant Professor of Political Science Robert Preuhs jumped into the media mix with ease during the Democratic National Convention. On Aug. 27, Professor Preuhs was interviewed about split voting on the “Kojo Nnamdi Show,” a program of American University Radio, WAMU 88.5. He was also interviewed on Aug. 20 by KOA Radio, regarding the possible democratic vice presidential choice. 7NEWS interviewed him on Aug. 5 about the number of ballots proposed for the November ballot. The Energizer Bunny took a sabbatical during the week of the DNC. And who slid into his spotlight, but our own Professor of Political Science Norman Provizer. To this day, we don’t know yet if the sabbatical is over. Professor Provizer served as a political analyst for FOX 31 during the week of the DNC, and was interviewed on FOX31’s “Good Day Colorado” about the Republican National Convention on Sept. 5.  He was interviewed by about the RNC and vice presidential candidate, Gov. Sarah Palin by KOA Radio’s “The Ride Home” segment on Sept. 3, 7NEWS on Sept. 1 and CW2  on Aug. 29. Provizer was cited in the Rocky Mountain News on the heavy police presence surrounding the DNC. The Vail Trail cited Provizer in an Aug. 27 article about unaffiliated voters. On Aug. 26, the Rocky Mountain News cited Provizer in an article about protesters. Also on Aug. 26, FOX31’s “Good Day Colorado” talked to Provizer about protestors during the DNC, specifically discussing what it takes to get arrested.

On Aug. 23, 9NEWS interviewed Professor Provizer about possible vice presidential candidates for Sen. Barack Obama. Twice on Aug. 15, Provizer was interviewed by FOX 31, on “Good Day Colorado” about the Georgia-Russia conflict and later that same day about how the candidates look to Colorado voters. On Aug. 8, he was quoted in a New York Times piece about the KHOW radio team of Dan Caplis and Craig Silverman. He was interviewed by CW2 on Aug. 3 about possible vice presidential candidates. Interim Chair for the African and African American Studies Department Ali Thobani was quoted on Aug. 6 in The Colorado Independent about controversial images of Sen. Barack Obama on the Facebook page of Justin Schaffer, son of Sen. Bob Schaffer. On Aug. 6, Colorado Higher Ed News announced that Professor of History Laura McCall would be presenting a slide show on Sakakawea on Sept. 3 at the “Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” exhibition, being hosted by Auraria Library.

On Aug. 3, Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies Lucas Shamala was interviewed on CW2 about his nonprofit, Support Africa Empowerment Foundation International.

In other news, on Sept. 4, the Rocky Mountain News announced the Denver Food & Wine Classic to benefit a number of organizations, including Metro State. News about Metro State’s closure during the Democratic National Convention not only traveled across the city, but coast to coast. On Aug. 28, College On The Record ran a blog “Paper Trails.” The piece about campus closures during the DNC initially ran on Aug. 26 in U.S. News & World Report. On Aug. 25, the New Hampshire UnionLeader.com ran a piece about the campus closures during the DNC. On Aug. 10, CBS4 ran a piece, including mentions of Metro State, about campus closures during the DNC On July 30, the Examiner.com also ran a piece about campus closures during the DNC.

On Aug. 25, The Denver Post announced that Denver Health was named the new hospital, emergency department primary and special clinic provider for Metro State.

On Aug. 21, Examiner.com announced a motorcycle ride to raise funds for an aviation scholarship at Metro State.

The Valley Courier, on Aug. 29, mentioned Metro State as a supporter of Ballot Initiative 113 that proposes to create the Colorado Promise Scholarship by eliminating a tax credit for large oil and gas companies.
