Upcoming events on campus cover a range of topics, from research in psychology to “Spatial” Olympics and applied anthropology.
Psych research
Metro State’s 13th annual Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference is being held on Wednesday, April 22. The keynote address, “The Scientific Pursuit of Happiness,” will be given at 8:45 a.m. in TIV 320 by David Meyers, a psychology professor at Hope College. Student poster presentations will be on the second floor of the Plaza Building from 10 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The conference is open to all Auraria students, faculty and staff for free. Economic freedom
Robert Lawson will lecture on “Economic Freedom of the World” on Thursday, April 23. Lawson is professor of finance at Auburn University and is the former president of the Association for Private Enterprise Education. He is also co-developer of the Economic Freedom of the World Index, which measures “the extent to which rightly acquired property is protected and individuals are engaged in voluntary transactions.” The lecture will be held at 11:30 a.m. in TIV 320. Pizza and soda will be provided.
Spatial Olympics
The Metro State Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Club will be holding its annual Spatial Olympics on Thursday, April 23, at 4:30 p.m. in the Adirondacks room in the Tivoli. Everyone is welcome to participate or watch the Spatial Art Contest and “Geo-pardy,” a geography trivia contest. Food and prizes will be provided.
Auraria LIbrary Faculty Seminar Series
The Auraria Library will hold the next session in its Connection series of faculty seminars on Friday, April 24, noon-1:30 p.m. in the Jackson Enhanced Learning Center. The focus of this session will be on teaching literature, both in English and other languages. Participants will learn about the best resources for perforoming reserach and for teaching students to find literature and related commentary. Applying anthropology to sustainability
The High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology will have its annual conference, "Development and Sustainability: Recognizing New Resources and Hearing New Voices," at the Tivoli from Friday through Sunday, April 24-26. The conference is open to all members of the campus community and is free of charge with a valid ID. It will include paper presentations, panel discussions and workshops presented by applied anthropologists and other social scientists. Lecture by economics blogger
On April 30, Bryan Caplan, will present a talk about his book, The Mythof the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies. Caplan is associate professor of economics at George Mason University, adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute and one of the three bloggers on EconLog blog. The talk will take place at 11:30 in the Tivoli Multicultural lounge. Pizza and soda will be provided.
