A Lewis Carroll theatrical production, a lecture on economics and the 22^nd annual Outstanding Women’s Awards reception are among the events happening on campus this week and next.

Economist Bryan Caplan to lecture on why democracies choose bad economic policies
The Department of Economics will host a lecture by Bryan Caplan, professor of economics at George Mason University, on Thursday, April 30.Caplan’s talk will be based on his book,“The Myth of Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies (Princeton University Press, 2007),” which New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof called “the best political book this year” in 2007.Caplan will discuss his theory that voters’ irrational beliefs about economics lead them to support bad economic policies.

Caplan earned his Ph.D. in Economics at Princeton University and joined the George Mason University Economics Department in 1997. He has written editorials for the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, and was featured on ABC’s 20/20.

The talk will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Tivoli Multicultural Lounge. Free pizza and soft drinks will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation.

Theatre Ensemble performs Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast
Join the theatre department for a Romp through Wonderland with the Theatre Ensemble Performance students’ production of “Lewis Carroll: Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast.” The performance will be this Saturday, May 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Arts Building Room 271 (Black Box Theatre).

The script for the production was arranged by Theatre Chair Marilyn (Cookie) Hetzel and M. Lee Potts. The one-hour play is suitable for children from ages 5 through 120. Entrance fee is one non-perishable food item to be donated to the Metro State Student Food Bank, and doors open at 2 p.m.

Reception honors outstanding women
The 22nd annual Outstanding Women's Awards reception will be held next Thursday, May 7, at St. Cajetan’s. Doors open at 5 p.m. with appetizers and champagne, and the formal program will begin at 5:30. The cost is $5 for students and $15 for nonstudents.

“We are so thrilled that this signature event is now in its 22nd year as an integral part of the Metro community and a vehicle for acknowledging the fine work of our students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumna,” said Maurice Hamington, director of the Institute for Women's Studies and Services. “It is a time to come together and reflect on the year as well as collectively think about our future.”
