Center for Individualized Learning appoints new assistant director
Jun 10, 2009

Only here six months, Christine Flug already has contributed tremendously the the Center for Individualized Learning.
Christine Flug, assistant director of the Center for Individualized Learning, has hit the ground running. Since her appointment in January, Flug has been counseling students on developing an individual degree program that fits their needs.

Elizabeth Parmelee, director of the center, noted that Flug brings a unique set of skills and qualities to the program. “Chris has an excellent sense of student needs and is artful at drawing the students she meets with into a larger conversation about their dreams, goals and challenges, before helping them identify a path to success at Metro State,” Parmelee says.

Parmelee says Flug has already contributed greatly to the center’s new program, funded by the Colorado Department of Higher Education, promoting the return of students with over 90 credits who have never completed a degree (see http://www.mscd.edu/~collcom/

). “Christine has been working with many of these students and is skillful at helping them identify what their options are, what challenges they must overcome, and how to get started without being swamped the first semester back.”

Flug has held positions in higher education and administration, including faculty development in health sciences at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. After moving to Colorado in 2007, she spent some time teaching composition at the Community College of Denver.

Flug received her bachelor’s degree in business from Simmons College in Boston and a master’s in English from the Southern Methodist University of Dallas before earning her doctorate in American literature from Harvard University.

“The IDP program works with students from all fields and backgrounds and Chris’s wide-ranging experience is a fantastic contribution to the Center and its capacity to work well with all students,” says Parmelee.

“I like the students that we serve because of that fact that they all are genuinely engaged in their education,” Flug says.
