Roadrunner Update: Luna wins 2nd national championship; softball players named All American
May 27, 2009
Metro State track star Anthony Luna has won his second national championship.
Competing in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in San Angelo, Texas on Saturday, Luna ran the 800-meter race in 1:49.26, just .01 seconds off the school record. He took the national indoor 800-meter title in March.
Shawn Lindbom finished fifth (1:51.86) in the same race and, along with Luna, was named All-American.
Teammates Rick Bogatay and Nathan Newland finished 10th and 12th, respectively, in the 1500-meter run.
The Roadrunner team finished as No. 16 during the competition, the highest finish in Metro State history.
Softball players garner honors
Tara Mickelson and Kellie Nishikida batted their way as the first softball players in school history to earn All-America honors. Mickelson was named Daktronics first team All-America for her skills as a batter and catcher. Nishikida was named to the second team All-America for her work as centerfielder and her impressive batting statistics.
