Roadrunners runnin’ in the summer sun
Jun 17, 2009
Metro State track star Anthony Luna continues to break records with his feet.
Luna, a junior criminal justice and criminology major, broke his own school record in the 800-meter run on June 14 while competing at the American Milers Club track meet in Indianapolis, Ind. Luna ran the race in 1:48.51, breaking his former record of 1:49.25 that he set in 2008. He also took fourth in his heat, finishing behind three professional runners. The race winner finished less than half a second ahead of Luna in 1:48.27.
Luna will run again in Indianapolis on June 17 with hopes of qualifying for the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held June 25-28 in Eugene, Ore. The qualifying standard for the 800m at the USA Championships is 1:48.45. Luna’s Metro State teammate, freshman Scott Ingram, has already qualified for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 1500m run. The Junior USA Championships will also be held June 25-28 in Eugene.
Luna and Ingram both competed at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May. Luna, who won the 800m indoor title in March, continued his Division II dominance with a second national championship. Ingram, however, did not reach the finals in the 1500m.
According to Metro State Sports Information Director Andy Schlichting, these summer competitions are a natural extension of the college season and “a way for them to continue to improve during the summer.”
