In the midst of Olympic fever, a Metro State junior won a silver medal much closer to home last weekend. Amy Nunn, a human performance and sport major, placed second in the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Apex Ice Arena in Arvada.

Approximately 70 student-athletes from colleges and universities around the country entered in the event, which was organized and sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating.

“While Figure Skating is not an NCAA-recognized sport, these skaters have been competing since they were young,” said David J. (Joe) Armstrong of the Mile High Figure Skating Association. “Once a year, those attending college have an opportunity to compete at the national championship level in the sport that they love and to represent their school.”

Nunn, who boasts a 3.63 grade-point average, skated a program to a modern version of "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." According to an article about the event on icenetwork.com (http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080810&content_id=50554&vkey=ice_news), “Nunn started her high-energy program with a double Axel-tap toe-double Axel sequence and went on to successfully land every one of the six remaining jump elements in her program, including another double Axel and a triple toe loop.”

"This competition was really fun," she said. "It was so nice to compete with people your own age, and I loved how everyone cheered for you."

About Nunn’s performance, Armstrong said, “She skated very fast and clean, with no errors. She looked like she was having a ball.”

As a result of her 2nd place finish, Amy has been named and invited by U.S. Figure Skating to represent the United States in the Coupe de Nice (International Cup of Nice) competition in Nice, France, in October.
