Metro State student-athletes are doing great things on and off the field, as evidenced by recent activities with the Denver Nuggets and the “I Have a Dream Foundation,” as well as their position in recent polls and rankings.
Nuggets and DPS students on campus
The Denver Nuggets hosted their fifth annual open practice on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Auraria Event Center, a benefit for Denver Public School students in grades 3-8. Over 1,500 DPS students were in attendance and they all were treated to entertainment provided by Nuggets mascot, Rocky, Metro State's mascot, Rowdy, as well as the Nuggets Dance Team, public address announcer Kyle Spiller and and DJ Bedz.
The morning was capped off with a 20-minute scrimmage featuring one of the NBA's top teams. Metro State's student-athletes helped escort the DPS students around campus and into the gym and gave all of the DPS students chance to meet college students.
"Our partnership with the Denver Nuggets is great for DPS students and for the College," Metro State athletic director Joan McDermott said. "The students really love getting an up-close look at the Nuggets. It also gives future college students a chance to visit a college campus and interact with college students. Metro State prides itself on community engagement and this event is a wonderful opportunity to bring the Denver Nuggets, Metro State and Denver Public Schools together." Roadrunners in the community
The Metro State women's basketball team recently beganits year-long partnership with the I Have a Dream Foundation in Denver. The team and coaching staffvisits the 3rd-5th graders monthly and participate with them in athletic activities, tutoring, and positive life skills.
"It is an exciting opportunity for us as a team and a positive break from our preseason preparations," said head coach Linda Lappe. "The kids are very energetic and excited to learn new things from us, and our team has a great time interacting and leading them."
The Roadrunners are stressing the importance of positive attitudes, dealing with tough situations, and treating others with respect. The October visit included several fun relay races and team building activities. The Roadrunners open their season with an exhibition onNov. 6at Northern Colorado in Greeley at 7 p.m.
Rankings and Placement
The 6th-ranked Roadrunner women's soccer team has stretchedits win streak to 14 matches - the second-longest streak in school history and the second-longest active win streak in the nation.
The Metro State men’s soccer team jumped back into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's NCAA Division II top-25 poll on Tuesday, checking in at No. 25.
