Metro State's Anthony Luna became the school's first-ever national
champion in either indoor or outdoor track and field, winning the 800m
run at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 14,
in Houston, Texas.
Luna, a junior, ran the race in 1:51.99, more than a second faster
than the closest competitor. His time was also just over a second
slower than his school record time of 1:50.53.
The
men's distance medley team of Nathan Newland, Derek Fiorini, Shawn
Lindbom and Todd Tolentino took fifth and all four members earned
All-America honors. Luna became the fifth Roadrunner to earn
All-America honors after his victory on Saturday.
Overall, the Roadrunners placed tenth in the nation.
Athletic Director Joan McDermott was in Houston to witness the
championships, as were President Stephen Jordan, who currently serves
as chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council, and his wife
Ruthie.
