One of Metro State’s educational pioneers has passed away. Jodi Wetzel, director of the Institute for Women’s Studies and Services from 1986 through 2005, died Wednesday, May 13, in Denver. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Cajetan’s on Sunday, June 7, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at the institute, 1033 Ninth St.
A professor of history and women’s studies, Dr. Wetzel came to Metro State following a national search for a director for the just-formed women’s institute. She developed the institute, combining the academic program with women’s services, created the curriculum and instituted joint appointments for faculty. That model of linking academics with services is still considered cutting-edge more than 20 years later. Dr. Wetzel also developed the Outstanding Women Awards program, which just celebrated its 22nd year. She was named an emeritus professor upon her retirement in December 2005.
Over her career, Dr. Wetzel earned numerous awards, including the Hilda A. Davis Award for Educational Leadership from the National Association of Women in Education and the Distinguished Service Award from Metro State. Her Ph.D. was in American studies from the University of Minnesota.
“She was a wonderful woman and a strong mentor for many, many women,” says Human Services Assistant Professor Tara Tull, who worked with Wetzel for many years as the institute’s associate director of women’s services.
Dr. Wetzel’s family has requested that memorial gifts be given to the Meredith Wetzel Scholarship, which she and her husband David established in memory of their daughter. Checks should be sent to:
