Groups, Personal Growth, and Academic Skills Workshops, Fall 2009

Groups require a brief meeting with the group facilitator (s), prior to its start. To participate in a workshop, you may just show up. All groups and workshops are open to Metro State students only. There is no charge for participation.  For persons who need special accommodation, please contact us in advance.

GROUPS


Coping Skills Groups


This  group will focus on four important Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills to help you improve your relationships, end self-defeating behaviors, and increase your ability to cope with challenging emotions. The four skills include mindfulness, interpersonal skills, managing your emotions, and coping with difficult situations.
Days: Tuesdays ● September 22 - November  3

G-L-B Relationship Group


This gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual support group focuses on how we relate to ourselves, our partners, our families, & our friends. We will explore our relationship with ourselves and how this directly impacts the important people in our lives. Topics will include relationships and dating, empowerment, self-esteem, gay development, religion, trust, family, safe sex, boundaries, being out, and others.
Days: Thursdays ● September 24 - December 10

General Support Group

This group is open to both males and females and is designed to provide feedback and support on issues that are often troubling and recurring as patterns. These may involve making important decisions, becoming independent, developing interpersonal skills, or finding out what it takes to succeed at college.
Days: Wednesdays ● September 30 - November 18

Improving Social Interactions


If you tend to get nervous, anxious, or shy around others and it gets in your way of participating in social events, then this group is for you. There will be focus on getting you more relaxed, more prepared, and more confident for a variety of social situations.
Days:  Wednesdays ● October 14 - December 9

THREE–SESSION MINI-SERIES DISCUSSION GROUPS


Veterans Discussion Group


This is a 3-part drop-in support group for those who have issues related to being a veteran, either yourself or significant others, who have returned from deployment or are about to be deployed. We will explore issues and feelings that are often hard to discuss amongst family and friends.

PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS WORKSHOPS


Substance Abuse


Drugs and alcohol are problems if they cause problems in any part of one’s life, one’s health, one’s work or one’s home. Do you think about drinking all the time? Have you tried to quit or cut down without luck? Gain clarity about the role substance use is playing in your life or in the life someone close to you. Identify strategies for making positive steps toward healthier approaches of substance use.

ACADEMIC SKILLS WORKSHOPS

Effective Communication with Your Professor

Being able to effectively communicate with your professors is important to your success as a college student. In this workshop we will discuss strategies for advocating for yourself in order to improve your academic experience and performance.

Learning Styles & Their Impact on Your Success

This workshop is designed to provide students with information on how they learn, and what works most effectively and efficiently for them. Come & identify whether you are an audio, visual, or kinesthetic learner and see what a world of difference it can make in your life.

Managing Test Anxiety


This workshop is designed to assist students who are typically well prepared for tests but who lose confidence and blank things out on the day of the exam.

Exam Strategies for Success

Are you finding that your grades do not reflect what you truly know? Are you disappointed with your performance on exams, and wonder what you might be doing wrong? Discover strategies to bring out your best performance.

DIVERSITY WORKSHOP


Dealing with Oppression


This workshop will focus on the ways in which people of color may be experiencing different forms of oppression. We will brainstorm strategies for addressing or confronting inequities that contribute to frustration and hopelessness. Open to students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
