Layering
Whatever outdoor pursuit you are involved in, dressing in layers is key to comfort and safety.

The basics of layering are:
Wear several light layers instead of one heavy layer
Start with close fitting sinthetic layers
Follow with synthetic or wool insulation layers
Finaly you may need a shell for wind and rain protection.

Shell Layer
A water proof shell is an important article of clothing to carry when hiking. It can function as a rain and wind layer.

The jacket pictured here is Goretex™, a waterproof yet breathable fabric. It is made by Patagonia™

Insulation layer: Sweater
Synthetics are very warm for their weight and bulk, they are also comfortable next to the skin.

Pants
There are many options available. Be sure to choose pants that are non-cotton and comfortable.

For winter use or for mountaineering you should choose an insulating pant layer.

Gloves and Hats
You should have a pair (or two) of gloves and a warm hat with you regardless of the season when hiking in Colorado.

Wool and synthetic knit gloves, like the ones pictured, are OK for summer. These have traction dots on the palm, which is key.

Wearing a broad rimmed hat during the heat of summer is a good choice.
