What Disciplines offer the First Year Program?

All of these!

  • Anthropology
  • Chicano Studies
  • English
  • Honors
  • Political Science
  • Reading
  • Speech
  • Social Work
  • Women's Studies

Each section of the First Year Seminar uses the same textbook, ReReading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Reading and Writing, the 6th edition, and participates in similar activities and classroom assignments. However, each individual section may also approach the subject matter from the perspective of a particular discipline. For example, the English section may emphasize writing selected personal essays while the Sociology section may emphasize examining cultural content.

So do I have to declare a major before I enroll in the First Year Program?

Not at all. In fact, most of our students register for a section of the First Year Seminar long before they know what they want to major in. Part of our mission is to assist you in identifying personal interests and talents so that selecting a major is easier. In the meantime, select a section of the First Year Program that sounds interesting to you, or is close to what you might eventually major in. We encourage you to experiment and experience as much as possible during your time on the MSCD campus.

What if I take a section of the First Year Program and then major in something completely different? Does my First Year Seminar class even count towards graduation?

Of course! Any section of the First Year Program earns you three full credit hours. You can apply that credit toward your elective requirements and your multicultural requirement.
