A Message from Erin Durban
first recipient of the Gill Foundation/GLBTSS Scholarship
My name is Erin Durban, and I am the first recipient of the Gill Foundation/GLBT Student
Services Scholarship from Metropolitan State College of Denver. This scholarship makes it
possible for me to attend MSCD, where I will be a freshman this August.
Although I'm originally from Denver, I have spent the past six years of my life in Tucson,
Arizona. I attended Tucson High Magent School where I was president of the gay-straight
alliance and diversity club for my junior and senior years. This position enabled me to
reach out to my school community through silent demonstrations, speaker panels, and by opening
a safe space for students, teachers, and administrators to discuss issues of diversity and how
they affect the school atmosphere.
For over two years, I was part of a group called QueerVoice in Arizona. They sponsor a variety of
activities for queer youth intending to promote a safe social atmosphere and also to create awareness
about different issues pertaining to diversity and safe sex. During my involvement with QueerVoice I
trained to become a volunteer peer facilitator that continued my involvement in the community.
With my move up to Denver, I full intend to continue being an active member of the GLBT community. This
scholarship has opened a door for me to do that. It has also given me the opportunity to be a part of
MSCD without placing a greater financial burden upon my family. Along with all of my plans for involvement
in the MSCD and Denver GLBT communities, I also plan on pursuing a degree in cultural anthropology and studio
art. I want to make a positive effect on the people around me and try my hardest to create a higher level
of understanding and acceptance. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to do that with this scholarship. I
hope that you'll consider financially supporting this scholarship fund for the continued availability
of the great opportunity for future recipients.
