Advising: Health Care Management

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Metropolitan State College of Denver's undergraduate degree program in Health Care Management prepares competent individuals for direct entry into management within the health care field. By combining courses in health care management with other disciplines, such as marketing, computer management science, accounting and economics, the program gives students a strong foundation in management as it specifically relates to the health care industry.

Health managers are employed in a variety of facilities and organizations: hospitals, nursing homes, preferred provider organizations, health departments, educational institutions, health maintenance organizations, wellness programs, industrial health programs, the insurance industry, and governmental agencies at local, state and national levels.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to be admitted into the Health Care Management program, students must:

1. Meet admission requirements of Metropolitan State College of Denver.

2. Apply for admission to the college through the Office of Admissions and Records not later than four weeks prior to the beginning of the semester for which admission is sought. Applications for admission, college catalog and class schedule are available in the Office of Admission and Records (303) 556-3058.

3. Send official transcripts from professional schools and all colleges attended to the Office of Admissions and Records (Campus Box 16) Metropolitan State College of Denver, P.O. Box 173362, Denver, CO 80217-3362. A high school transcript is also needed if you do not have 30 hours of transferable college courses.

4. Make an appointment with a health care management faculty member for academic advising prior to registering for courses in the college (303) 556-3130. Bring a second copy of transcripts to the advising appointment (South Classroom, Room 226).

5. Complete 60 semester hours of college level work (junior standing) prior to enrolling in courses with the HCM prefix. You may enroll in general studies and/or support courses prior to taking HCM major courses.
Students lacking selected general studies credit may be eligible to take CLEP (College Level Examination Program) examinations at the Assessment and Specialized Testing office (303) 556-3677; Tivoli Building Rm. 347).

The student selects a minor with approval of the faculty. Students who have an associate degree in a health occupation may substitute up to 24 hours of selected, approved associate degree major courses in lieu of a minor toward the baccalaureate degree. Course credit achieved through standardized examination by diploma nurse students is equivalent to associate degree, health occupation credit. This credit will be accepted in the same manner as associate degree major course credit, i.e. up to 24 hours.

Health care management majors who desire to work in institutions providing care to the elderly are encouraged to take the interdisciplinary gerontology minor available through the department.


GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

120 semester hours are needed to graduate from MSCD.

COLLEGE ASSESSMENT TESTING

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education requires that all students pass an assessment test prior to registering for certain general studies courses (English and mathematics). You may complete these tests at the college orientation program or you may select an alternative time. Check the Schedule of Classes for dates and times. Be advised that you will not be permitted to register for the English and/or mathematics general studies courses until you have complied with this legislative requirement.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is strongly recommended.

Transfer credits from other baccalaureate programs:

Courses from another baccalaureate health care management program will be individually evaluated.

Advisors can help plan your schedule of courses, completion of graduation requirements, completion of articulation agreement forms, career counseling, etc.

Class Schedule:

Selected classes in the major are offered in the evening either Spring or Fall semester on a rotating basis.
Selected classes in the major are offered in the one day a week format.
Selected classes in the major are offered on-line.
Classes with low enrollment may be canceled.

Tuition and fees:

Tuition and fees are published in the class schedule every semester.
