More Information and Career Possibilities!!!

The HPS department would like to introduce you to their newest degree emphasis- Sport Industry Operations. This is a 40 credit hour course of study approved in 1997 and designed to give the student a strong knowledge base in the “business” side of the sport and fitness world. The convergence of sport, entertainment and media generates billions of dollars in revenue and provides a wide variety of employment possibilities for SIO graduates.

Students who want to stay actively involved within a sport or fitness setting will find this emphasis a unique career possibility. The areas of sport facility management, promotions, sales, marketing, day-of-game facility operations, security, risk management, media relations, player relations, corporate sales and sponsorship, insurance and forensic work are topics covered in the various classes, field experiences and internship opportunities which are a part of this emphasis.

Denver was named the number one sports city by Street & Smiths Sports Business Journal. Perhaps it’s the mix of professional teams, playing everything from football to lacrosse, it’s the attendance ratings for college and professional sports franchises, it’s the fans and of course three state-of-the-art facilities: Invesco Field at Mile High, Coors Field, Pepsi Center and the new Broomfield Event Center, ran by Broomfield Sports and Entertainment.

Metropolitan State College of Denver, one of the largest urban college campuses in the United States is located directly across the street from many of these venues.

The requirements for this emphasis include an optional internship for ten credit hours or approved classes for those ten credit hours, as well as a mandatory minor with the School of Business, most often management or marketing. Internships have been established with the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, Colorado Rockies, Kroenke Sports Enterprises at the Pepsi Center, the NBA, NASCAR, Broomfield Event Center, Men's and Women's PGA, Aramark Facilities & Services and various other sport industry enterprises, venues and businesses including state and national NCAA athletics programs.

This unique combination of classes, field experiences as sophmores internships as seniors, and partnerships with various sports agencies provide students with valuable preparation for working with sport franchises, sport retailers, manufacturers, municipalities, venues, etc...
