Application & Guidelines - Protection of Human Subjects

Rationale for a College-Wide Policy

There are several compelling reasons for instituting an institution-wide policy governing research activities involving human subjects. First and foremost, the rights and privacy of the individual must be protected in all research conducted by MSCD faculty, staff, and students. It is never too early for students to learn that there is a set of ethical standards that all researchers must follow. Standards should be introduced as early in the academic programs as possible and reinforced throughout the students' programs of study. With the large number of part-time faculty at the College, the degree to which appropriate treatment of human subjects is taught varies by department. An institution-wide policy will ensure continuity across the curriculum.
