Application & Guidelines - Protection of Human Subjects

Review Procedures

  1. All faculty, staff, administrators, or other stakeholders to MSCD are responsible for reviewing and complying with MSCD Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects. Additional copies of these documents may be obtained from the Office of Sponsored Programs (303-556-3484). As indicated in the MSCD HSRC Policy, the ultimate responsibility for ethical conduct of research remains with the researcher.

  2. The Human Subjects Review Committee meets the first Friday of each month and once during the summer. Proposals for review during these meetings need to be submitted at least one week in advance. However, the committee will accept proposals sent as electronic documents via email at anytime. Proposals sent via email are normally reviewed within 14 days from receipt.

NOTE: the committee prefers that all proposal documentation be sent as clearly identified electronic files (Word or PDF). Make sure to include author's last name, project title, and document name in the file name for each relevant document sent. Proposals may be sent by e-mail to Professor Jeff Forrest a
    t forrestj@mscd.edu.

If you need to send hardcopy proposal material, please submit the original and eight copies of the completed Review Form and attachments, to the committee chair, Professor Jeff Forrest, Campus Box 30 (Seventh Street Classroom 102B).

Note: It is important that your proposal follows the exact guidelines and requests for information as described in the Review Form If submitting electronically (preferred), please clearly identify each document submitted. Please save each document under a file name corresponding to the type of information requested, and also include reference to the PI(e.g, onsent Form Smith.doc). Only supply information requested in the Review Form Please be precise and to-the-point when composing content required for the proposal review.

  3. Research proposals that are not approved by the Human Subjects Committee may be resubmitted to the committee for further consideration. The committee will provide written comments and suggestions to assist the researcher in revising the proposal.

  4. MSCD research involving human subjects that does not follow the MSCD guidelines and policies, and that does not have the MSCD Human Subjects Committee approval, if required, will not be sanctioned by MSCD and, consequently, will not be covered under the college liability policy.

  5. As stated in sections B and C of the MSCD HSRC policy statemen
  6. MSCD faculty are responsible for insuring that these policies are followed by MSCD students they are supervising in research involving human subjects. Supervising faculty are also responsible for determining if the student research is exempt from review according to federal regulations (see policy, section A.9). Non-exempt research must be reviewed by the MSCD Human Subjects Review Committee. Student research falling into the exempt categories does not need to be submitted to the MSCD Human Subjects Committee but should be reported to our department chair for record-keeping purposes as soon as the projects have been defined. The project(s) should be briefly explained in a memo to the department chair.

  7. Research conducted by MSCD faculty or administrators must also adhere to the MSCD Guidelines. To insure proper compliance with these guidelines, faculty/ administrator directed research proposals involving human subjects at MSCD must be fully reviewed by the Human Subjects Committee prior to the initiation of the research study.

  8. Researchers from outside the MSCD community who wish to conduct research at MSCD, or using MSCD students as participants must receive committee approval in order to proceed even if the proposal has been approved by the IRB of another institution. MSCD faculty should not allow outside research in their classes without committee review and approval.

  9. In compliance with federal regulations, all approved research proposals involving human subjects must be resubmitted to the MSCD Human Subjects Committee for review under the following two conditions:

    1. Whenever there are amendments to the research procedures; and
    2. Annually when the study continues for more than one year.

  10. Please use the Review Form when submitting your proposal to the MSCD Human Subjects Committee.

In all cases of MSCD research involving human subjects, the MSCD Human Subjects Committee will be available for consultation regarding the application and interpretation of the MSCD guidelines and policies. Please contact any committee member if you have further questions.
