Smart Classroom Manual

How to Use a Smart Classroom

  1. When you enter a Smart Classroom, the Touch Panel should be blank.
    1. Touch the panel to wake it up.
    2. Touch the “Press here to begin” button to display the Main Menu.
  2. From the Main Menu, choose the appropriate icon for the device you need to use (i. e. VHS, DVD, Cable TV, etc. ).
  3. The controls for the selected device will appear on the touch screen (with the exception of the auxiliary device).
  4. Sound volume for the entire system is controlled from either the Touch Panel (the two buttons on the top right of the Touch Panel) or the volume control on the stereo (the big, round knob on the right).
  5. Press the “Home” button to return to the Main Menu. From this screen, you can either choose another device or quit the system.
  6. To quit from the Main Menu, touch the “Exit” button. The user will be asked if they really want to exit:
    1. Select “Yes” to Exit the system
    2. Select “No” to return to the Main Menu.

DO NOT TURN OFF EACH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT ON ITS OWN!!! This can disrupt normal functioning.

Using the Touch Panel:

The Touch Panel is used to control much of the system and should be used to turn the system On and Off.

The Touch Panel can be used to control the current device. After selecting a device from the Main Menu, the control buttons for the selected device will be displayed.

If the Touch Screen isn’t working, make sure the black cord is plugged into the side.

Sometimes the Touch Panel cannot send a signal to the device it is trying to reach. This is a common problem. The panel uses infrared to send signals to the other devices. Make sure there is nothing blocking the path of the beam. If there is nothing in the way, it may just be that the Touch Panel cannot send the signal. This is also a common problem. Use the controls of the specific device instead.

Switcher:

The Switcher shows what device is currently activated. It should not be used to switch between devices (only for trouble-shooting).

Controlling the Volume:

The Volume can be controlled using either the volume knobs on the stereo, or by using the buttons on the face plate of the Touch Panel. This volume control works for the entire system whether you are using the VCR, Cable TV, or the CD player. 32 is the optimum volume level for the audio.

Using the VCR:

Using the Touch Panel, select the VCR button from the Main Menu. A new screen will be displayed with the control buttons for the VCR. The VCR can be controlled from the touch screen or from the VCR itself.

Note: The projectors are very sensitive. If a video tape is not producing a picture or only produces a few seconds and then goes blank, check to make sure that all of the correct buttons have been pressed and set. If the tape being used is a homemade tape, it may not be playable because the projector can’t read the data. This is a common problem with homemade video tapes. If this is the case, the professor will have to acquire a TV/VCR cart to view the tape.

Using the Cable TV

Using the Touch Panel, select the Cable TV button from the Main Menu. A new screen will be displayed with the control buttons for the TV. The TV can be controlled from the touch screen or from the VCR channel buttons.

Using the Document Camera:

Using the Touch Panel, select the Docu Cam button from the Main Menu. A new screen will be displayed with the control buttons for the Document Camera. The touch screen should be used to focus and “zoom. ”

If visuals on the document camera are not displayed correctly, check if the negative (NEGA) or black/white (B/W) mode is activated. They can only be turn off using the document camera controls. Therefore, “Lock Control Disabled” has to be turned off.

If visuals on the document camera are not displayed by the projector, check if INPUT SELECT is activated. In order to turn INPUT SELECT off, you have to use the document camera controls. Therefore, “Lock Control Disabled” has to be turned off.

In order to re-active the controls of the touch panel, you have to leave and re-enter the Docu Cam menu.

Using Transparencies:

Select the button that turns OFF the front light and then select button that turns ON the back light. Alternatively, you can also just turn ON the back light since it will automatically turn OFF the front light.

Lock Control Disabled” should be ON when you start the Document Camera. This button toggles control between the Document Camera buttons and the Touch Screen buttons. Turning this OFF allows the Document Camera to be controlled from the Document Camera itself.

Note: You cannot use the Touch Screen if this is in place.

Using the Stereo System:

  • CD player: Using the Touch Panel, select the CD player button from the Main Menu. A new screen will be displayed containing the control buttons for the CD player. The CD player can be controlled from the touch screen or from the player itself.
  • Cassette player: Using the Touch Panel, select the Cass player button from the Main Menu. A new screen will be displayed containing the control buttons for the Cassette player. The Cassette player can also be controlled from the touch screen or from the player itself.
  • Radio tuner: The radio tuner cannot be controlled from the Touch Panel and therefore has to be controlled from the stereo system itself.

For a cleaner sound, turn the Sub woofer OFF. This can be done by using the Sub woofer button on the stereo. Press the sub woofer button until the light of the sub woofer button turns off.

Using the Auxiliary Ports:

The device must be plugged into the Auxiliary Ports. This must be done before the system is turned on!

Using the Touch Panel, select the Aux button from the Main Menu. The Touch Panel cannot control the Auxiliary Device. You must use the device’s own controls.

Yellow – video
Red – right sound
White – left sound

Using a PC:

Plug the computers power supply into the extra power connection on the back of the Document Camera. Connect the PC to the wall outlets for video, audio and network using the appropriate cables in the room.

Network ports on the wall:

Yellow - open phone line
Pink – AHEC
Purple – CCD
Blue – Metro
Black – UCDHSC

Caption Decoder (ADA):

Smart Classrooms are equipped with Caption Decoders for Cable-TV in order to assist students with disabilities. If Caption Decoding is requested, the Caption Decoder Box must be turned on.
