Dr. Carl Powell
Dr. Carl Powell has over twenty-three years of experience in managing high-performing technology teams. He began his IT career with IBM in 1984, where he held various managerial positions, culminating as the Manager of IT Services for all IBM locations in Michigan, Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. Dr. Powell has also held technology management positions at KeyBank, Medical Mutual of Ohio, and Progressive Insurance.
Most recently, Dr. Powell was Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Cuyahoga Community College. Joining the college in 2000, he was responsible for the college’s centralized data, voice, video, and internet systems across all six locations. During his six-year tenure, Dr. Powell implemented major system upgrades to the college’s infrastructure, including a new high-speed and highly-secure gigabit data network, a new digital telephone system, and expansion of the college’s ERP system to include web-based self-service modules for students, faculty, employees, and alumni. He designed and managed the technology installations at CCC’s new Corporate College facilities and implemented a strategic planning and executive oversight program for all technology initiatives.
Dr. Powell is one of the founders of the Northern Ohio IT Roundtable (a regional security forum in cooperation with the United States Secret Service) and is a past president of the Northeast Ohio chapter of the Society for Information Management. He has presented at local NEOSA and CIO Forum events as well as at national EDUCAUSE, OHECC, League for Innovation, and SunGard Higher Education conferences.
Dr. Powell received his Ph.D. from Cleveland State University where he was an adjunct professor in education. He also has a Masters degree in computer science from Kent State University.
