Free Antivirus Software For Home Use
What are Pop-Ups?

MSCD does not provide students, faculty or staff with anti virus software for your home computers. You will have to purchase this yourself and it is highly recommended that you do so. However you can also click on the link above, follow the instructions and download and install some free anti virus software. We do not support this software at the MSCD Helpdesk though, you are on your own to use it. For maximum protection keep your anti virus software updated and run it often, also keep your Microsoft Windows updates current.

Keeping your home computer virus free is YOUR responsability. Buy anti-virus software, keep it up to date and run it regularly. This will cost a lot less than paying someone to rebuild your computer and you won't run the chance of data lose.

Stinger is a free program put out by McAfee which you can download and install on your PC it will search for and remove the 28 major virus's now out.
Click here to download it and save it to your desktop.
After you have downloaded it to your desktop, save it to a formatted floppy disk. Boot your computer up in the "safe mode", by tapping on the [F8] key after turning your computer on. Keep tapping on it and you should get a menu on a black screen. With the arrow keys go to "Safe Mode" and hit the [Enter] key. Hit the [Enter] key on the next 2 or 3 screens, booting up in the safe mode will take longer and your display will look a lot different. After you finally get booted up in the safe mode put the floppy disk that has "Stinger" on it and run Stinger to search for virus's on your c: drive or all hard drives. After running Stinger you should get ALL of the Windows Critical Updates, this will take quite a bit of time depending on how fast your ISP connection is. These Windows updates mainly have to do with security updates to protect your computer. If you do not have an anti virus program installed I recommend that you get one, keep it up to date and run it regularly. It will probably cost around $50.00 but if you computer is important to you it is worth it.

Blaster Virus, if your Windows 2000 or XP computer keeps rebooting it probably is infected with the "Blaster" virus. You need to put the "Blaster Removal Tool" on a blank floppy disk, boot up the computer up in the "Safe Mode", and run the Blaster removal tool from the floSppy disk, just double click on "Fixblast.exe" after removing the virus you need to boot up in the normal mode and go to "Windows updates" and download and install all critical updates to protect the computer from being reinfected. Update your antivirus software and run it at least once a week.
