Information Technology Help Desk
Phone: 303-556-3208 or
E-mail:
mscd-ithelpdesk@mscd.edu

Upon receipt of your personnel paperwork in Human Resources (AD 510), you will be assigned an ID number, username, and password to the Metroconnect web site. To access information about Metroconnect, including username and password information, go to http://metroconnect.mscd.edu/ .

Computer Labs:
Reservations to use the Computer labs are created at the beginning of each semester and distributed in department mailboxes to each instructor teaching a class that uses the lab. The instructor must see a lab assistant to get an account for the lab system established.
It is not the same as the account to get on the academic network.

MSCD students have a default login that is the same user name from Metroconnect and a password that is the last 4 digits of the student ID number (900...) plus the two digit month and two digit day of birth (so the password is 8 digits).
If a student forgets the password or otherwise is unable to log on, then the student should contact the help desk at 556-8325. Sometimes lab personnel can also get this information. UCD students will not have accounts, so they must see one of the people at the front desk in the lab and request an account.

Smart Classrooms:
General classrooms are all equipped with document cameras that can be projected onto a screen. Many are also equipped with LCD projectors to which a laptop can be connected. Most rooms have a touch pad to activate the projectors. Plaza 307 is not a Department lab, but offers smart classroom capabilities, and must be reserved in advance.MSCD's Information Technology Department provides training for computer lab and Smart Classroom equipment use. Go to
http://www.mscd.edu/~infotech/services/ for information.

Copier:
The copier is in the Department office. There are occasional maintenance needs for the copier so please plan ahead to insure that your copy needs have timely completion. To activate the copier, enter the Access code and then press "Start".
(See a member of the office staff to receive your personal Access code.)

If the copier is not in working order, please contact office personnel for assistance. There are other copiers in the Plaza Building that may be available for use on an emergency basis only.

Teaching Information:
The Department will provide the faculty with the departmental syllabus for every course they are teaching. Each syllabus gives the course description, the goals and criteria of the course, the required and optional course resources, the detailed chapters to be covered and the quality guidelines.

E-mail:
E-mail is the official mode of communication for MSCD through the Metroconnect portal on the web. E-mails to your metro address cannot be forwarded to other servers so you must check you
r Metroconnect E-mail regularly.

Class Coordinators:
Every 1010 and 1020 course has a faculty coordinator. The coordinator is responsible to inform instructors about special requirements or common Midterm and/or Finals. In addition, the coordinator is available to help with the structure of the class and with tests and handouts. Communication is often via E-mail or through memoranda in faculty mailboxes.

Class Policies:
The term Course Syllabus refers to the departmental document that describes the specific topics and requirements for an individual class. To avoid confusion, a document that an instructor creates for a class is called the Class Syllabus.
You must create an individual Class Syllabus for each class that you teach and distribute it on the first day of class. It must include the following information:

  • Semester (e.g. Spring 2006)
  • Course number and title (e.g. SPA 1010, Elementary Spanish I)
  • Your name and office number (the adjunct faculty offices are in Plaza)
  • Contact information (phone and/or e-mail) The Department can provide a voice mail box number for you if desire.
  • Office Hours (Part-time faculty are encouraged have at least one hour per week per class; Lecturers, to have at least five hours per week)
  • Textbook and other references
  • Grading Policy and Rubric (% per test, etc.)
  • NC withdrawal dates and procedures
  • Holiday information
  • Official policies: http://www.mscd.edu/~mdl/policies.htm See also the Student Handbook at http://handbook.mscd.edu in the Standards of Conduct Section
  • Submit a copy of the Class Syllabus for each of your classes to the Department office on or before your first class meeting

Substitute/Absence procedures:
You must notify the Department of any absences from the classroom, whether planned or emergency.

The college does not provide substitute instructors. As you learn who else teaches in the department, arrange a buddy system where you cover for each other. Do not use instructors who are not currently teaching in the department. In case of emergency or illness, contact the Department office to find a substitute or cancel your class.

University of Colorado, Denver (UCD) Students:
UCD students in your class do not show up on the class roster or e-mail listings. To add a UCD student to the Metroconnect group e-mail list: go to:
http://www.mscd.edu/metroconnect/requests/ucdstudent.htm .

A separate sheet that lists UCD students in your class comes later. Grades for UCD students are posted on a list separate from that for MSCD students, but can be turned into the MSCD Registrar's office, Central Classroom Building, Room 105 (CN 105).
All other grades are submitted through MetroConnect - see below!

Materials and Supplies:
Course Materials
The Department processes the textbook orders and Syllabus for the faculty. Contact the Chair or the Assistant to receive your textbook(s) and Syllabus. Some software is available for home use through IT. See Dr Glatz.

Classroom supplies
Supplies (sticky notes, pens, pencils, etc) are in a supply cabinet in the office. If you can't find a needed supply, then contact a member of the office staff.

Faculty ID:
A faculty ID is provided for faculty who need one for classroom access, parking, and/or RTD purposes. Contact the Assistant for ID procedures.

Keys:
The Department office key (PL 360) does not open the Adjunct Faculty offices. Keys generally are provided only for faculty and are distributed at the start of the semester.

Parking/RTD:
Campus map and Parking Information
: http://www.mscd.edu/enroll/admissions/campus/map/ (Quick Link: Maps and Parking)
Instructors do not get free parking passes or discounts. A campus ID card is required at some lots on a regular basis and at other lots only when events are taking place (to pay the normal parking fee instead of the higher event parking fee).
An RTD bus pass may be purchased at the Parking and Transportation Center (PTC).
Bus Schedules are available in the Tivoli Information Center.

Grades:
Grades are submitted using the MetroConnect system.
You will need to log in there and into the My Services section.

The following grades are possible in MDL courses:
A = Superior
B = Above Average
C = Average
D = Below Average but Passing (A grade of "C" or better must be earned in each required course to have that course count toward the Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages. The grade of "D" in any 2000/3000/4000 level MDL course is passing, but does not allow the course to be counted for the major. It must be repeated with a higher grade of "C" or better to do so.)
P = Pass
F = Failure
NC = No Credit (See
policies for more information!)

Some Other Metroconnect Features:

  • Class Lists
  • MSCD E-mail system
  • Calendar features
  • Send e-mail to entire class or post group notes (My Courses)
  • Payroll (including pay stubs), benefits, and tax form information (Employee)

To receive network access to work on computers on campus, please give the Chair, in writing, your Metro ID # and birthday (MMDDYYYY). The Chair will then e-mail the Metro helpdesk to set up your network access and notify you when it is completed with a message in your department mailbox.
