Urge
What if, instead of walking
down Centre Street
today, I skipped?
I would skip
as hard and as high as
I could go.
The pavement transformed
my springboard to freedom.
My arms would swing wildly
and I'd snort and sweat
secreting inhibition from
every last pore.
As I pounced past liquor stores
and laundr-o-mats,
my laughter would roar.
What if instead of dragging
to the subway
today, I danced?
Twirling arms outstretched,
I'd spin and sport a perm-a-grin.
I'd reach toward the eternal sky
and sing until my song rang through the streets.
Yeah, I'd sing and scream
away the weight I carry
upon my breast.
Shaking loose from the straight jacket
of conformity.
Bursting and breaking through
the plastic mold of who
I ought to be.
