A Little More
Spencer Essey

The cold dark hands of insomnia
have slipped quietly around my neck
and choked all life,
it’s funny how that works.
I am afraid to fall asleep
for fear of the vivid dreams
which will undoubtedly come.
When I am happy
I do not dream,
sleep is an unwelcome visitor
in my happy world,
an interruption.
But in pain I stay awake,
preferring instead
to stay there
and say,
just a little more,
a little more and I’ll be okay.
It’s funny how that works.
