Flowers Will Fade
Jesse Van Horne

He was taught
to appreciate flowers,
their brilliant gem stone hues,
the way they bend, sway in breeze.

But as the seasons fell,
he began to despise them,
he saw they dwelt on the brink
of ruin, of death.

In their dance and shine
he saw his own life,
now shining brightly,
but soon to shrivel and fade,
each petal breaking off,
drifting toward the dance
with mud and flies.
