| Correspondence
Courses
With no class meetings, correspondence
courses allow students to set an independent learning pace at home.
Successful correspondence students
are disciplined learners who can set and meet their own deadlines.
- You may register
for correspondence courses at any time and are given one calendar
year to complete a course, unless you are a financial aid recipient.
Students using financial aid must check with a financial aid counselor
to determine how taking a correspondence course will affect their
award. (For example, Financial Aid students may not have a full
year to complete a course.)
- Register online as you would for
any other course. Tuition is $130 per credit hour or $390 per
class (subject to change). You are not responsible for paying
the stipend amount.
- Lesson packets and textbooks are
purchased through our online bookstore MBS
Direct.

- Applicability of correspondence
courses to majors may vary with departments. Please contact your
major department before registering if you intend a correspondence
course to fulfill a major requirement.
- Note: BIO 1010, SPA 1110, SPE 1500,
and SPE 2530 have an additional fee for AV materials.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What is a
correspondence course?
It is a fully accredited college course in which you learn the
same information you would in a classroom, BUT you study independently
with the aid of a study guide prepared by the instructor. Anyone
can take a correspondence course; however, if you are an independent
learner who can set your own deadlines and meet them you will have
more success with this format.
The study guide includes lecture notes,
a syllabus, number of assignments, essay questions, instructions
for exams or instructions for a research paper. Learning aids may
include audio tapes, video tapes, and slides. TEXTBOOKS ARE USUALLY
REQUIRED.
How
do I register for a correspondence course?
Current MSCD students can register using the Banner registration
system via the web at www.mscd.edu
Lesson packets and textbooks for each
course may be purchased through our online bookstore MBS
Direct. Information regarding textbooks is in the lesson packet.

If you are a new student to MSCD,
you must complete an admission application prior to registering.
Please call Extended Campus at 303-450-5111 or 303-721-1313 for
a Colorado Consortium for Independent Study catalog, which contains
an admission application and registration form.
NOTE: Even though you have a year
to complete a correspondence course, you are only considered to
be registered for it in the semester that you initially register.
Do correspondence
courses count towards my degree?
MSCD allows a total of 30
credit hours of correspondence courses to be used toward a baccalaureate
degree. You must check with your faculty or academic advisor to
determine which correspondence courses will count for your particular
degree requirements. If you
are completing a degree at an institution other than MSCD, you must
check with your own college to see which
correspondence courses are approved for your degree.
Will my financial
aid apply to correspondence courses?
Financial Aid may cover up to two correspondence courses per semester.
The Financial Aid office has course completion requirements which
you must maintain in order to remain in good standing for financial
aid. CHECK WITH A FINANCIAL AID
COUNSELOR for specific information.
Financial aid students may register
and pay tuition over the Banner system (see "How Do I Register"
section for more information). Financial Aid payment policies apply.
Refer to the current semester class schedule for more detail.
How long do I have
to complete a correspondence course?
You have one year to complete
a correspondence course. For example, if you register in the summer
semester of '03, you have until the deadline for the summer semester
'04 to complete. (IF YOU ARE A FINANCIAL AID STUDENT, please see
Financial Aid information for details.)
Correspondence courses allow you to
work at your own pace; however, they are not designed to be accelerated.
Mailing and grading take time and that is why students are allowed
one year to complete. Pay careful attention as to how assignments
should be submitted in order to meet your own deadlines. Realize
that instructors are not immediately available for grading papers
and exams especially during semester breaks, holidays, and some
parts of summer semester.
When anticipating a graduation date
or if you need an official transcript sent to an institution, ALLOW
ADEQUATE TIME FOR GRADING AND MAILING OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. If you
wish to have your grade posted with MSCD's Registrar for a specific
semester, then your assignments must reach us three weeks prior
to the last day of that semester. This allows our office and the
professor adequate time to forward, grade, return the assignment,
and post the grade with the office of the Registrar.
What about grading?
If you complete the course
in the same semester you registered, the grade will be posted at
the end of that semester. If you don't finish the course in the
same semester, the grade will be posted as a "CC" (Continuing Correspondence).
The "CC" will remain on your record until you finish the course.
You must submit ALL course work to receive a grade. The instructor
will then assign a letter grade in the Registrar's Office. If you
do not complete the course during the one year you are allowed,
the "CC" will change to an N/C (No Credit).
