Before
you do anything:
- Please
read everything on this page for attempting to do any activity.
- First, read
=> How to 1)
Do
/ 2)
Write
Up
(5-Point
Form) / 3) Submit
activities
- Also, carefully
review this file: How
to Find Your Directions in the Sky
- Refer to the class schedule
for
deadlines. There are no make-ups or
time
extensions, except as provided in the "extenuating circumstances"
provisions in the syllabus.
- Some activities
require
simple outdoor observations and clear skies. Some may take several days
or even weeks to complete. Plan accordingly. There are no time
extensions
due to weather.
- 6 Activities
are required. The one with the lowest score (including zero
for non-submission), will be dropped and you will be
graded only on the top 5.

For lecture class students,
all activities are due in class and on paper, on the Wednesady
scheduled. For online students, all
activities are due, via the online submission form, no later than 10
p.m. on the date indicated. The deadlines are absolute. Let me repeat
myself: Lecture class
students MUST
submit
the activity during the Wednesday class period in which the activty is
due. Online students MUST
submit their activity write-ups by 10 p.m. on the Wednesday scheduled,
through the online submission form only. Nothing will be accepted after
these deadlines. There are NO exceptions except for "extenuating
circumstances" as defined in the syllabus. The deadline is absolute --
for lecture students that is 10:50 a.m. on the scheduled Wendesday
and exactly 10
p.m. for online class students. (At 10 p.m. the form closes and you
will not be able to submit after
that, not even if you are only one second late). No late
activities, no emailed
activities, and no handwritten activities will be accepted. There are
no exceptions, no extensions, no excuses.
SPECIAL
OPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY: I am giving "Colorado Skies"
in Gates Planetarium on September 10. There is an admission fee and if
you wish
to go, you must make a reservation (303-322-7009). Here's the deal: you
can attend this program, sign my attendance sheet after the program,
and then submit a short descriptive write up afterwards in place of
any activity. It must be submitted on the same schedule and in
the same manner as whatever activity it is being substituted for. As
long as you attend, sign the attendance sheet and submit a reasonable
summary report, you will get full credit in place of one of those
activities. This is not extra credit and cannot be used for extra
credit, but it certainly can be considered easier than the original
activity. For more information on the program, see this web page: Colorado Skies. This is a one-time
offer. |

PLEASE
READ ALL 11 NOTES
FOLLOWING:
NOTE
#1: You
must
have your User ID and
Password
before
you can submit activities online. Do not email activities. Do not
attempt to
access the Submit form
for your activity submission until you are actually ready to submit. It
is programmed to allow only one submission, so be sure you are finished
with it before you submit. If you submit it and then find a major error
or omission, you cannot go back and change it. If that happens and you
discover it before the 10 p.m. due date deadline, you must email me the
corrections before the deadline. However, as per the instructions in
the "How to Submit" file, do NOT
send any attached files without prior
permission.
NOTE
#2:For
on campus students, activities are always due in
class
at the end of class period on the Wednesday of the week the activity is
scheduled. I may also accept them via the online submission form, but
no later than 10 p.m.on the Wednesday they are due. Activities from
online students are due using the online
form provided no later than 10 p.m. on the due date. Do not email your
activity, and especially do not send attached files without prior
permission. No activities
(including alternates) will be
accepted after the deadlines. No exceptions, no extensions, no excuses.
Deadlines will be observed. If you are submitting online, be aware that
they software is unforgiving. If you exceed the deadline by
even one
second, your submission will be refused and you will get a zero.
Period.
When you have
obtained your result and
before you do your write up, make an effort to determine if your result
is reasonable. If you are confused with the instructions or do not know
how to check your answer, Ask before you submit your activity. Once you
submit it, I will grade it as is.
NOTE
#3: Some
activities require outdoor observations. They do not require
"perfect"
observing conditions and should be able to be performed even from
locations in town. It is expected that you will perform these
observations from the safety of your own home or on campus. Under no
circumstances are you authorized to perform these
observations
from any location other than the campus or your own home. If you choose
to make such observations from any other location, please understand
that your safety is your own responsibility. If you feel that you
cannot safety perform any observation for whatever reason, or if you
cannot complete any activity due to a ADA defined disability, please
contact your instructor for an alternate.
NOTE #4:
Some
activities may require a bit of planning and should be started early.
Some activities may require several observations
over a period of weeks. Don't
get caught too late to do these. Late activities, including alternates,
are not accepted.
NOTE
#5: Activities use
the same submission software as the tests, but the reporting is a bit
different.
As soon as you submit an activity, you should receive a confirmation.
Because the activities are basically "essays" and cannot be graded
automatically, the computer will tell you that you got "0/10" or
something like that. Don't panic! That just signifies that it has not
been graded yet, but it confirms that you submitted it. You will be
able to check it only when I have had the chance to grade it. After I
have notified you that your
activity has
been graded, you may sign back on to the activity submit form to check
your grade and my comments. Just click on "Key" instead of "Begin."
NOTE
#6: When you
check your results after I grade it, the initial grade may say
something like 10/11 points, 90.1 percent, even though you actually got
a full 10/10 points or 100 percent. This is a quirk in the software
that I cannot fix. The important thing for you to know is that the only
grade that counts is the the one reported near the bottom of the graded
copy, just above my comments where it says something like SCORE:
10/10 . It also will be correctly reported in the
gradebook,
which you should check every time I tell you it has been updated.
NOTE #7:
Your computer
or Internet problems are not an acceptable excuse for missing an
assignment deadline. You need to understand how your computer, browser
and Internet connection work. Please plan ahead so that if you do have
computer problems of any kind you will have time to find a substitute
computer or another way of accessing the Internet to complete your
assignment on time. However, if the problem is due to my
error
or a verifiable problem with the computer server
that holds the
required class material then I will consider an adjustment. (Other
excuses not accepted include your job or personal
schedule,
your legal problems, your location, travel plans or the weather.)
NOTE #8:
It is your
responsibility to take all
reasonable safety precautions and to complete the required activities
either from the security of your own home or from the campus. No
assigned activities require you to complete them from any location
other than your home or the campus. If you choose to do so, you assume
full responsibility for your own security. The optional or alternate
activities may call for locations other than the campus. These
activities are not required, however, and if you choose to do them, you
assume responsibility for your own security. These provisions were not
prompted by any adverse incident, but rather due to increased concerns
over liability and insurance costs.
NOTE
#9: I
should
not have to state this, but I will. Don't handwrite it, don't
email it, and don't fax
it. Online
students must submit through the form provided. No other form of
submission is acceptable, and no late submissions will be accepted.
NOTE
#10: Students are welcomed,
even encouraged to work with a partner or even a small group of other
students. In that case, the data will be the same. However, each
individual student must write up his or her own submission, including
all 5 points of the format, as an individual work. I do not accept
group submission, and I do not accept one student just copying over
something that another student in the group has written. Furthermore,
each paper from a student in a group must include the names of the
other students in the group in the header.
NOTE #11:
This also should really go without saying, but it is a problem often
enough
that I feel it is necessary to make it very clear: You are to do your
own work. I encourage you to work with others, but you must write up
the activity on your own. The use of other's students materials, or any
hint of plagiarism or other forms of academic
dishonesty,
will earn a zero for the assignment, possible expulsion from the class,
and notice to the dean. Don't cheat. It isn't worth it.
