B.A., Duke University, M.A., Ph.D., University of Arizona; Assistant Professor of Anthropology

I am a cultural and linguistic anthropologist whose research focuses on international dating and marriage between U.S. military personnel stationed outside of the United States and “local national” women and men.  One aspect of this research that I am currently working on involves the intersections of discourses on transnational love, courtship, and marriage with more restrictive ideas about ethnic identity, citizenship, and national security.  Beyond this research, my interests include gender, intimacy, and the family; national identity and globalization; the ethnography of communication, cross-cultural communication, and language ideologies.  I also have an intense personal and academic interest in Japanese film and anime!  At Metro, I teach a variety of cultural and linguistic anthropology courses, including courses on Japanese culture and society.  I plan to offer a number of new linguistic anthropology courses in the upcoming semesters.
