Academic dishonesty is a serious offense because it diminishes the quality of scholarship and the learning experience for everyone on campus.  An act of academic dishonesty may lead to such penalties as reduction of grade, probation, suspension, or expulsion.


 

Definitions of Academic Dishonesty
(Including those in the Student Handbook)

CHEATING

1. Use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations

2. Dependence upon the aid or sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems or carrying out other assignments

3. Acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a member of the College faculty, staff or other students


COLLABORATION

Unauthorized collaboration on an assignment (e.g., project or homework) without permission from the instructor


FABRICATION

Intentional or unauthorized falsification or invention of any information, data, or citation in an academic exercise


FACILITATION OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty


MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS
(e.g., submitting one paper to more than one class)

Submission of written work assigned for one course to a second course without having received prior permission from both professors


PLAGIARISM

1. Use by paraphrase or direct quotations, of the published or unpublished work of another without full and clear acknowledgement.

2. Unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency that may or may not be engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials.

 

All students are responsible for understanding and adhering to the MSCD Code of Conduct, which is in the MSCD Student Handbook.

 


Procedures and Possible Sanctions
(Include but are not limited to the following:)

Procedures

The instructor makes initial judgment

The instructor reports the incident in writing within fifteen working days to the student, department chair and the Judicial Officer

Sanctions

1. Judicial Officer and Office of Academic Affairs determine if institutional sanctions should be invoked, such as suspension, expulsion, probation, verbal reprimand, or other sanctions as appropriate.

2. A permanent "F" grade for the course may be assigned by the instructor that is not subject to the College’s "Last Grade Stands" policy, unless altered pursuant to the MSCD grade appeal procedures.

3. The instructor also reserves the right to assign an appropriate grade for a specific assignment or the course as a whole.

   

 

MSCD Student Academic Dishonesty Code and Process

The MSCD Student Code of Conduct describes the authority, jurisdiction, and procedures for the administration of the College’s student judicial process.  As members of the academic community, all students attending MSCD assume certain obligations of performance and behavior.  Based on this premise, reasonable policies, procedures, and regulations have been developed to guarantee each student’s opportunity to learn and to protect the fundamental rights of others.  All students are responsible for understanding and adhering to these standards of conduct, which are found in the MSCD Student Handbook.

Process For Student Academic Dishonesty

1. Academic Dishonesty is a violation of the Student Conduct Code & should be reported to the Judicial Officer.

  • First reported to the Department Chair

  • Then to the Judicial Officer via written complaint

2. Charges are presented to accused students

  • In writing by faculty member

  • Copies to: Judicial Officer, Associate Academic VP, and Department Chair

3. Meeting of Accused Students, Faculty member, Associate Academic VP, Judicial Officer, and Department Chair (if possible)

4.     OPTION #1 and/or

OPTION #2

Informal disposition (preferred)

  • Resolved at the most direct level

  • All Parties agree to resolution and/or disciplinary sanction

  • Faculty determines grade sanction

  • If appropriate, Judicial Officer renders resolution/disciplinary sanction to student as described in the MSCD Handbook

PROCESS IS COMPLETE

 

 

Formal Disposition

  • Resolved through Administrative Hearing

OR

 

  • Disciplinary Hearing with Judicial Board

AND

  • Student presents his/her case

  • Witnesses may be present

  • Judicial Board recommends resolution/sanction

  • Faculty determines grade sanction

  •  Judicial Officer renders resolution or disciplinary sanction to student as described in the MSCD Handbook

  • Student has right to appeal to Vice President of Student Services

 

PROCESS IS COMPLETE
