CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS

(ADOPTED JANUARY 2002)

 

CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE I

NAME
The name of this organization shall be the Student Association of Social Work (SASW).

ARTICLE II

PURPOSE
The SASW is organized to fulfill the needs of a self-governing, undergraduate student body, which seeks to achieve the following goals:

1)     to insure student voice in the Social Work Program by providing opportunities for active student participation in departmental affairs relating to faculty, curriculum and policy;

2)     to encourage active student participation in social action programs within the community;

3)     to create and maintain a positive image, greater understanding and deeper appreciation of the social work profession; and

4)     to maintain affiliation with the National Association of Social Workers and the Colorado Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, Inc.

ARTICLE III

MEMBERSHIP
Membership shall be open to all full-time, part-time, and
certificate students, faculty and alumni of The Metropolitan State College of Denver.

Membership dues shall be $10.00 per academic year.  Money for dues will be used to pay general office expenses and to support activities of the SASW.  Voting privileges become effective immediately after dues are paid. 

ARTICLE IV

OFFICERS/TERM
Elected officers of the SASW shall consist of; 2 Co-Presidents, 2 Co-Vice Presidents, 2 Co-Secretaries, 2 Co-Treasures, and 1 NASW Representative.

Term of office shall be one calendar year.  The incoming officers shall assume duties immediately following their election.

 ARTICLE V

ELECTIONS
Elections shall take place during the February general meeting and for one week following the meting.

An election committee consisting of the outgoing officers shall be responsible for the collection of nominations from students and for presenting the slate to eligible voters at least one week prior to the elections.  Prior to voting, all candidates for office will present election speeches and provide written position statements at the February general meeting. 

Elections shall be held by secret ballot.  The elections committee shall be responsible for the distribution, collection, and counting of the ballots.

To be eligible to hold office in the SASW, students must be declared Social Work majors, be currently enrolled in Social Work classes, and be paid members of the SASW.

ARTICLE VI

MEETINGS
There shall be a minimum of one general meeting per month. 

The officers shall meet at least twice a month, once for it’s own business and once at the general meeting.  All meetings shall e open meetings.

The agenda for each meeting shall be posted at the designated location one week prior to the meeting.

All decisions concerning SASW activities shall be made by a two-thirds vote of those present at the meeting and any proxy votes.

 ARTICLE VII

AMENDEMENTS
Revisions and amendments to this Constitution and it’s By-Laws shall be made at monthly general meetings by a two-thirds vote of those present.

 

By-Laws

SECTION 1: Officers

Duties of the Officers: Each position shall be shared by two people who have equal responsibility for their duties.

Co-Presidents: At least one shall conduct and attend all officer and general meetings; develop an understanding and help implement the tasks, goals, and objectives relating to the organization as a whole; shall arrange for graduate schools of social work to make on-campus presentations; assist committees when necessary; and call special meeting and appoint special committees as may be necessary to implement activities of the organization. 

Co-Vice Presidents: At least one shall attend all officer and general meetings; perform duties of the president in her/his absence; assist the Presidents with duties as necessary; and represent the SASW on the Student Advisory Board Committee of the Social Work Program. 

Co-Secretaries: At least one shall attend all officer and general meetings; take the minutes at the officers and general meetings; take responsibility for the SASW files and records; and be responsible for the SASW newsletter. 

Co-Treasures: At least one shall attend all officer and general meetings; collect dues for membership; keep records of SASW funds, income and expenditures; give a monthly report on the financial status of SASW; reimburse officers and members for SASW expenses; and coordinate with the Student Activities of the Met to access club funds. 

NASW Representative: shall attend all general meetings; shall attend all NASW Colorado Chapter meetings; present information about NAS and the local chapter to SASW at general meetings. 

Section 2:  Vacancies:

Vacancies for officers shall be filled within one month following resignation.  New officers shall be approved by the general SASW membership.  Notification of elections shall be posted in the Social Work Office two weeks prior to the election.  Voting shall be by secret ballot and shall take place over the span of one week. 

An officer’s resignation will be assumed if she/he fails to attend two consecutive months of officer or general meetings, unless voted otherwise by the majority of officers. 

Section 3:  Faculty Advisor

The advisor must be a faculty member of the Social Work Program. 

The faculty advisor may appoint an assistant.  The faculty advisor or her/his assistant will attend at least half of all the SASW meetings; act as a liaison between students and faculty members of the Social Work Program; provide input and advice at meetings; and be a resource person for the SASW.
