About the Program


Surveying and Mapping Degree Requirements

The bachelor of science program in surveying and mapping is the only one of its kind in Colorado or the region. It prepares graduates for registration as professional land surveyors, but is broad enough to prepare them for careers in any other area of surveying and mapping, or for graduate study.


Basic Degree Requirements

  1. Complete a minimum of 131 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher for all course work.
  2. Complete at least 40 (forty) semester hours in upper-division courses (3000 and 4000 level courses).
  3. Complete all General Studies requirements listed for the degree and major.
  4. Complete a 3-hour (three) Multicultural course requirement.
  5. Complete a 3-hour (three) Senior Experience course requirement.
  6. Achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in all Metro State courses that satisfy the requirements for the major, and for all the Metro State courses that satisfy requirements for a minor. [note: All majors in the Surveying and Mapping program (SUR) are required to complete with a minimum grade of "C" all courses prefixed with SUR, MTH, and PHY.]
  7. File an application for Graduation with the Office of the Registrar by the stipulated deadline.
  8. Complete a minimum of 30 (thirty) semester hours of credit at Metro State, including the last 12 (twelve) semester hours applicable to the degree.
  9. Complete at least 8 (eight) upper-division (3000 and 4 level courses) semester hours of the major and 3 (three) upper-division semester hours of the minor at Metro State.

Surveying and Mapping Basic Degree Requirements

Each student must successfully complete the following course requirements in this degree or previous degree.

  1. Mathematics [Note: All courses must be completed with a minimum grade of "C".
    • Pre-calculus (college algebra and trigonometry)or Trigonometry mathematics.
    • Calculus I, II, and III (no technical calculus or calculus courses for business majors).
    • Advanced Matrix Methods for the Physical Sciences
    • Probability and Statistics.
    • Computer Science Program course.
  2. Physics I and Physics II - Calculus-based. [Note: If a student has successfully completed two algebra-based physics courses with a laboratory sessions with grade of "C" or better, this requirement is waived.]
  3. Technical Writing.
  4. Speech or Public Speaking.
  5. Surveying and Surveying Related Courses. A minimum of 49 (forty-nine) semester hours in survey and surveying related topics. All elected courses in surveying and surveying related topics must be approved by the designated Surveying and Mapping program Academic Advisor. (Surveying-related courses are academic courses offered in other academic disciplines and departments, and are in the disciplines of civil engineering, computer science and/or computer information systems, drafting, forestry, geographic information systems, geography, geology, mathematics, natural resources, and statistics.)
