Student Teaching Requirements

Teacher Education students enroll in the appropriate level of Student Teaching and Seminar for twelve credit hours after all other course and program requirements are completed. Student teaching assignments are 16 weeks in duration. Students with incompletes in any course may not student teach until the incomplete is changed to an acceptable letter grade. Student teaching assignments for K-12 licensure students include 8 weeks at each level, elementary and secondary. Each split placement must be at least 8 weeks in duration. Students seeking an added endorsement must also student teach; however, the duration of this student teaching experience may vary based on experience (See the Student Teaching Director regarding duration). Students need special permission to take a course while enrolled in student teaching and are encouraged not to be employed during student teaching.

Student teaching is generally available only during fall and spring semesters. The traditional public school schedule does not allow for student teaching during the summer months. The schedule of the year-round schools is not conducive to an appropriate student teaching assignment of 16 weeks with the same teacher and class during the summer months. Student teaching requests, therefore, will generally not be approved for the summer semester.

General requirements for eligibility for student teaching include admission to the education program with completion of the program at the end of the student teaching experience, successful completion of the appropriate content exam, and an overall GPA of 2.75 or 3.0 over the most recent 45 credit hours.

Coursework and Residence Requirements

All required professional education and content area coursework must be completed with a grade of C or better before student teaching is permitted. A CAPP report verifying that all requirements for the major have been met and a signed program plan by teacher education advisors must be on file in the Student Teaching Center.

Out of state student teaching can be approved on a case-by-case basis; the candidate must meet with the Director of Student Teaching for approval.

Post-baccalaureate students who are seeking teacher licensure and are not degree seeking may become eligible to student teach with a minimum of 9 credit hours of teacher education coursework. They must meet all licensure requirements.

Placement Policy

In keeping with national accreditation standards, placements for licensure candidates are made with teachers who are licensed in Colorado in the appropriate content areas, have a minimum of 3 years' experience in their field of specialization, model good professional practice, express a commitment to inducting new teachers into the profession, and are recommended by their principal. Classroom and school sites are sought which provide candidates opportunities to:

• Demonstrate competence for professional roles;
• Relate theories regarding "teacher decision making in diverse contexts" to practice;
• Create meaningful learning experiences for all students;
• Study and practice in varied settings with different age groups, cultural groups, and exceptional populations;
• Dialog and reflect upon professional decisions and practice.

Student teaching placements are made only by the Student Teaching Center through the appropriate designated officials (whether at the district office or school building level).

Student teaching placements are not made:

• At the high school the licensure candidate attended;
• At a school where the licensure candidate is currently employed or has been employed;
• At a school where relatives or friends of the licensure candidate are employed;
• At a school the licensure candidate has children or siblings in attendance.
