Top Auraria fundraising team to participate in AIDS Walk
By Josie Klemaier

The Auraria Walk Team, comprised of students, faculty, staff, family and friends from the Auraria campus, will participate in the annual fundraiser AIDS Walk Colorado on Sept. 16.

The Auraria Higher Education Center, CCD, Metro and UCD have sponsored the team for over a decade. The Auraria team was one of the largest in 2005 and raised $8,400 for the cause, ranking in the top 12 fundraising teams.

The event raised a total of $800,000 in 2005. Proceeds this year will benefit the Colorado AIDS Project and 30 other AIDS service organizations, including Children’s Hospital HIV Program, RAIN Colorado, and Women’s AIDS Project Empowerment Program.

In 2005 some 3.1 million people around the world died of HIV/AIDS-related causes, according to the Global Health Council. Today it is estimated two teens in the U.S. are infected with the still-incurable disease every hour.

AIDS Walk Colorado is a five-kilometer walkathon, accompanied this year by a 5k running marathon. Both events begin at Cheesman Park, with open registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the marathon stepping off at 10 a.m.

There is no fee to register. However, a minimum of $35 must be raised to receive an official Auraria Team t-shirt. The Auraria Team will hold drawings for prizes for the top fundraisers the morning of the walk.

To register for the Auraria Walk Team, call 303-556-6333 or visit http://www.aidswalkcolorado.org.
