Freeplay: Wolf + Lamb Music
By Joshua Smith
jsmit293@mscd.edu

Now is the time to start paying attention to Wolf + Lamb Music, as they are fast on their way to becoming pioneers of the next generation of techno producers.

The duo started out throwing small parties in a loft in New York, and has expanded to throwing events for more than 2,000 people in large warehouses as the interest in minimal techno has grown in recent years.

But throwing parties hasn’t been the only avenue that these young entrepreneurs have explored. They have also launched Wolf + Lamb Music, their home on the web. Rather than offering releases with artwork and several tracks by a single artist, they offer single tracks that they and others have produced. Interestingly, the site also shares the source material for each track, and listeners are encouraged to remix songs and submit the results for possible release on the label.

Their own talent, along with that of their remixers, has led to an enjoyable techno collection for DJs and enthusiasts alike. Varied in sound and feeling, all the site’s music helps to dispel the long-held belief that techno music all sounds the same. But make no mistake: this is definitely pumping, dance-floor techno.

One epic, sprawling track on the site is the Wolf + Lamb original “MAS.” Clocking in at just under 8 minutes, this trancey number slowly builds and changes while maintaining a high energy without relying excessively on a heavy, thumping kick drum. The gradually modulating synth line that dominates the track distinguishes it from others available. With an older, dark-warehouse-in-the-city vibe, “MAS” shows that innovation in sound is a continually changing process and that all music reflects its time.

Another standout jam on the site is Loren Steele’s remix of Wolf + Lamb’s “Holding Her and Loving You,” which is deep and grooving where the original is stompy and aggressive. Each has its place, and this remix would be best suited for late-night dance floors or quiet jaunts through the city.

Wolf + Lamb Music offers another take on what Internet distribution of music can mean. By making it convenient and easy for the audience to participate in the listening process, they have shown a new way to invest energy into music.
