The Metro women’s cross country team won their first meet of the season as Desarae Gleason led the ’Runners and the pack of 5.8-kilometer racers at the Colorado Christian Open in Lakewood Oct. 11.

The women’s team beat Colorado Christian by a score of 51-22 and also came ahead of Regis, which did not run a full team.

“Desarae had a breakthrough race,” Roadrunners head coach Peter Julian said. “We’ve been seeing it in practice, and today she showed her stuff.”

Gleason finished the race with a time of 20 minutes, 26 seconds and was followed by teammates Judy Jimenez (3rd place, 21:20), Natalia Haberl (5th place, 22:20), Becca Fisher (6th place, 23:01) and Therese Panian (7th place, 23:02).

On the men’s side, Gabe Luna led the ’Runners with a second-place finish and a time of 17:19 in the 5.8-km race.

Jacob Schuman (3rd place, 17:40), Roscoe Smith (4th place, 17:49) and Greg Zadina (11th place, 18:38) rounded out the pack for Metro.

Regis edged out Colorado Christian 45-52 in overall scoring, while Metro did not qualify because they did not run a full team.

The Roadrunners’ next run is at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships Oct. 21 in Pueblo.
