In ancient times, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a day marking the end of summer and the harvest season and the beginning of a cold, dark winter. This holiday fell on Oct. 31. These ancient pagans dressed in costumes of animal skins and built massive bonfires to make sacrifices to the gods. They believed it was a night when the boundary between living and dead was blurred, and the spirits of dead people returned to earth.
