Denver's Halloween scene
By Lindsay Wilson
lwilso55@mscd.edu

In ancient times, the Celts celebrated Samhain, a day marking the end of summer and the harvest season and the beginning of a cold, dark winter. This holiday fell on Oct. 31. These ancient pagans dressed in costumes of animal skins and built massive bonfires to make sacrifices to the gods. They believed it was a night when the boundary between living and dead was blurred, and the spirits of dead people returned to earth.

Fast-forward 2,000 years. Samhain has evolved into Halloween. Revelers have abandoned the animal skins, fiery sacrifices and, most likely, the ghosts, but they still love an excuse to play dress-up and, for just one night, become someone they’re not.

Descend into the depths of hell at DC10’s Hell’s Playground on Friday night. Indulge your kinky side Saturday night at the 7th Annual Victorian & Fetish Ball at Tabu. Or carouse with the witches at the Mercury Café’s Ultimate Witches’ Ball. Whether you’re into the upscale club scene or a laid-back bar atmosphere, this weekend there will be a Halloween party that’s just your style.

So be creative, transform yourself into someone your friends won’t recognize and hit the town with the rest of the freaks to celebrate Halloween.
