Kenny Rhoades places second at NCAA Championships

Kenny Rhoades, a diver for Metro’s swimming and diving team, finished second in the 3-meter diving competition March 14 at the NCAA Championships at the Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Rhoades, who is in his first season with the Roadrunners, scored 475.30 points in the 3-meter event and finished second to Brandon Birchak of Saint Rose, who finished the event with 547.10 points. Rhoades earned All-American honors for his performance. He also finished third in the 1-meter diving competition a few days later, scoring 392.25 points to earn a second All-American honor.

“Kenny certainly dove well enough to be a national champion,” Metro’s diving coach Kevin Sage said. “What was special is that he hit every dive. Our focus all year long has been this meet, and it was fulfilling to watch him peak at the right time. It was quite the performance.”

The freshman diver got to the championships after scoring a second-place finish in the 3-meter dive Feb. 23 at the North Central Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Grand Forks, N.D. Rhoades scored 464.95 points placing behind Nate Jimerson of St. Cloud State, who won with a score of 503.05.
