Galactic w/ The Coup and Ohmega Watts

Few bands are more eclectic by nature than New Orleans’ own Galactic. Markedly funk and jazz-inspired during the past decade, the bayou bunch has gone with a more hip-hop bid on their new album From the Corner to the Block and their ensuing (and seemingly continual) U.S. tour. Galactic will appear Feb. 15 at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium with album cameos and tour guests Chali 2NA (of Jurassic 5), Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) and Boots Riley and The Coup.

A heavily instrumental band whose lead vocals are forever in flux, Galactic has made a habit of appearing with a number of other funk bands and solo cameos in the past that include New Orleans natives The Meters, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Neville Brothers and Professor Longhair.

Galactic retains their unique sound on Corner to the Block, adding to their typical funk, some tight rhymes and rhythm and blues background harmonica grinds on the fifth track, “Think Back (featuring Chali 2NA),” while combining deep African drums and a touch of reggae to make songs like “Second and Dryades (with Big Chief Monk)” bump with big dance world beats.

Galactic is sure to be bumping Feb. 15 at the Fillmore, and is the perfect show to shake off those lonely Valentine’s Day blues.
