Swimming and Diving Metro’s swimming and diving team finished the season on a high note as diver Kenny Rhoades set a school record in the 3-meter dive, and both the men’s and women’s swim teams grabbed third place on Feb. 14- 16 at the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Golden. Kenny Rhoades continued his dominant season by once again breaking a diving record on his way to another win. For the swimmers, frontrunners Alejandro Hernandez for the men and Lisa Black and Meredith Quast- Lanphier for the women each won an event. Hernandez took the 200-yard butterfly while also placing second in the 400-yard medley to finish a solid regular season for the freshman swimmer. Fellow freshman Black wrapped up the backstroke, winning both the 100-and 200-yard contests. Quast-Lanphier, in her final regular season meet for the Roadrunners swim team, ended on a positive note by winning the 100-yard freestyle. The nontraditional student also received an award commemorating her four years at Metro. Roadrunner’s swimmers Evan Venrick and Jessica Shaddock sealed second-place finishes, Venrick in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Shaddock in the 200-yard freestyle. Track Metro’s track team traveled Feb. 16 to the School of Mines’ All-Comers meet in Golden, posting individual successes in a variety of events. Roadrunner’s sprinter Sheila Hughes led the team, taking fifth place in the 200-meter dash. Runner Jessica Jenkins took a top-10 spot as well, reaching sixth place in the 800-meter run. For the men it was teamwork that took center stage as the distance medley relay team took second. Individual marks included Chris LeBlanc finishing just outside the top- 10 in the mile and sprinter Shawn Lindbom taking 12th in the 200-meter dash. The Roadrunners’ next meet is Feb. 22, once again in Golden for the Twilight Open. Lacrosse Metro’s club Lacrosse team has its first game Feb. 23 against the Colorado School of Mines at Dicks Sporting Good Park in Commerce City. Cycling Metro’s club cycling team starts its road biking season Mar. 1-2 at the University of New Mexico race. The club begins its third year of existence under new leadership, with Metro cyclist Jon Grano taking over as president.
