Softball off target in tournament

Metro women’s softball team split their weekend set Feb. 23 and 24 at the Migh High Invitational at the Hidden Lakes Complex in Arvada.

Metro started out strong beating the University of Mary 5-4, but then suffered back-to-back losses against the Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo 11-6 and 8-4 respectively. But the Roadrunners finished the weekend by defeating UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday in a 9-0 shutout.

Junior pitcher Jessica Fisher opened the tournament by pitching a complete game in her team’s 5-4 victory. Along with only four runs allowed, Fisher had three strikeouts and threw only about 60 pitches.

“I did pretty well, everything felt good,” Fisher said.

Sophomore second baseman Sarah Rusch hit the first and only homerun of the game against the University of Mary. Rusch finished the contest scoring two of the five runs including three RBI.

Metro pitcher Casey Thompson started the second game against Colorado School of Mines and had a rough, showing allowing seven earned runs including three homeruns. Thompson was then relieved by freshman Libby Balogh in the middle of the fifth inning. But Balogh couldn’t stop the bleeding giving up a three-run homerun plus another earned run in the sixth inning leaving the score 11-6.

Metro shortstop Amber Roundtree was one of the few bright spots in the second game as she hit the only homerun for Metro against the Orediggers in the sixth inning. As a freshman, and looking extremely comfortable at the plate, Roundtree was 7-for-8 in the first two games.

“I’m not afraid to make a mistake. If I strike out or get out, I’m going to see her again,” Roundtree said.

Fisher then returned to the mound in the third game against the Thunderwolves, but the results weren’t the same as she was quickly replaced by Balogh in the fourth inning after giving up eight earned runs.

“I thought I was ready, but I guess not. It was hard coming back in,” Fisher said. The Roadrunners’ offense tried to keep up with CSU-Pueblo’s thriving offense, as Metro designated hitter Ashley Johnson tied the game at 4-4 with her two-run homerun in the third inning. But Metro couldn’t hold on, allowing four more earned runs, losing 8-4.

“We just took the first game for granted and won it, and then just went down hill from there,” Fisher said.

Fisher came back strong on Sunday shutting out UC-Colorado Springs 9-0, helping her team to exit the tournament with a 2-2 record.

Metro is now just under .500 with a record of 4-5. With only two juniors and one senior on the roster of 17, coach Fisher knows that patience will be a key factor in helping her team grow.

“I think they’re doing a good job and we g

The Roadrunners now head home for the first time for a four-game series against Western New Mexico to begin conference play on March 1.
