More than 50 co-workers, friends and family members
congregated March 5 to recognize the career of Jeff Johnson, interim
registrar for Metro.
After working in the registrar’s office for
34 years, Johnson will retire March 7 and leave behind a faculty
who relied on his expertise and commitment.
“I have not met anyone more committed to
Metro students than this man,” said Judi Diaz-Bonacquisti,
associate vice president for enrollment services, who addressed
the group along with President
Stephen Jordan. “His contributions to students
will be felt many years down the way,” she said. Attendees
were welcomed with a snack bar and refreshments, and everyone gathered
to share their praise for Johnson. Smiles and laughter filled the
room, and Johnson reminisced with his supporters while they congratulated
him individually.
Jordan presented Johnson with a plaque commemorating
his service to the school, and colleagues gave him a cap and gown
set that read, “I was on the 34-year plan.”
“This is a real loss for the college,”
Jordan said. “But we are indeed happy about his retirement.”
Johnson joined Metro’s registrar’s office
in 1974 after completing his master’s degree at Miami University
in Ohio.
During his tenure, Johnson was a key player in
major improvements in the department, including implementing the
degree audit service on MetroConnect and updating the registration
process at the school. He took over as interim registrar in June
2006.
Diaz-Bonacquisti and her team will attempt to fill
the productive shoes of Johnson. Associate registrar Kim Clark,
along with Paul Myskiw, interim associate registrar, will assume
Johnson’s responsibilities beginning March 10. When asked
what he planned to do after his retirement, Johnson simply replied,
“recollect.”
