News in brief around Auraria

CoPIRG light bulb swap out.

Campus Climate Challenge Campaign of
CoPIRG Student Chapters will be hosting
a light bulb swap-out event from
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m on Thursday,
March 20, at the Tivoli Commons.
Students are encouraged to bring their
incandescent light bulbs and replace them
with compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs,
which use 80 percent less energy and last 10
to 15 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
CoPIRG will have a piñata shaped like
an incandescent bulb for students to
break, and the group will host a showing
of the film “Eleventh Hour.”

“Apprentice” video challenge
Students have the change to win prizes from
the Auraria Campus Bookstore or tickets
to the “Apprentice Challenge at Metro: The
Boadroom Finale” event on May 1. Just take
the Apprentice 60 second Video Challenge
found at www.mscd.edu/apprenticechallenge.

Mental Health Resources
To address the mental health needs of
students, the Metro State Counseling Center
and the Health Center at Auraria now have
one phone number that connects faculty
and staff to a psychiatrist around the clock
should they be concerned about the safety
of a student or the safety of others. Students
can call 303-352-4455 for non-emergency
situations. The number will also be used as
a crisis line for students when the health
center and counseling center are closed.

Building tested for asbestos
Since the discovery of asbestos in the soil at
the Science Building renovation site, Facilities
Management has scheduled an asbestos
survey in the Science Building from March
24 to 26. The survey will take samples
from building materials and test materials
for asbestos that seem suspicious.
No asbestos will be released during the survey,
and staff will be able to stay in the building,
according to the news bulletin on @Metro.
