Astronomy grant brings
science to virtual life

Metro and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science have received a grant for $470,000 to test the Immersive Virtual Environment at the Gates Planetarium. The IVE will be used as an additional tool in teaching astronomy to non-majors.

The grant is meant to allow researchers to study how well students are able to learn about space with the assistance of virtual environments.

The IVE allows visitors at the Gates Planetarium to travel virtually around space, giving them different perspectives on extra-terrestrial events, such as solar and lunar eclipses and the phases of the moon.

If the virtual environment is successful, the immersive technology could find its way into other classrooms, allowing biology students to immerse themselves into a skin cell or history students to view a historic battle.
